The present Jeevan Bima Nagar stands on the 460 acres land allotted by BDA to Life Insurance Corporation housing society way back in 1966. LIC colony as it is called now has model houses built and distributed by LIC of India to policy holders. Each applicant had to give a deposit of Rs10000/- along with application. As this scheme did not get many takers locally, allotment was extended to whole of India. Agreement for 1000 houses with government of Karnataka was entered into as Karnataka Government opted for Quarters for their employees. Similarly, Dept of ISRO got about 233 units. Construction of lic quarters started in 1989. Smallest unit is 65 ft x 15ft [ground floor] to the general public. Thus these houses have about 14 square built up floor area ground plus first floor. They are row houses.
Currently plot no 2 of 1.2 acres is under litigation. Nitin deshmukh a private entrepreneur has filed a writ petition against the allotment to
- Huble trust Kodagu
- Dakshina kannada gowdera samaja
- mugaveera sangha from mangalore.
At present there is no park for the LIC Colony residents. Meanwhile the disputed site is used as a parking space for the general public.
