Asia/Calcutta
Citizens' Action Forum (CAF) has organized an interactive meeting with the political party leaders of the State parties, at 4 PM, on 1st May 2008, at the R V College Auditorium at 2nd Block Jayanagar, Bangalore 560 011.

Mr. Venkatachalaiah has kindly consented to preside over the program. Major political parties have confirmed their participation.

BRTS/Bus lane from Indiranagar to E-City?

Public Transport

One option for a BRTS in Bangalore could be from Indiranagar/Domlur to E-City after the airport shifts and the elevated expressway comes up.

Once the airport shifts, the pressure on the IRR will come down. Once the elevated expressway comes up one lane can be dedicated to the BRTS on Hosur Road (at the bottom).

Yes or No for BRTS - stats and numbers?

Public Transport

There are multiple threads popping on BRTS here and elsewhere, thanks to the situation at Delhi and Pune. Here is one more, but focused only on gathering statstics required to support or counter the BRTS decisions. What would be realistic ridership targets for a BRTS at Bangalore, Pune or Delhi - basically, size of target market? What is the current profile of road space usage? What is the average commute distance in these cities (Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Ahmedabad)?

Light Rail Transit (LRT)

Metro Rail

We have seen ...

  1. Roads being discussed on praja and one thing that has come up is that the traffic manages to congest any space available, wide or not..
  2. BRTS..the current implementations are having teething issues than real problems. But there is still lot to be desired. To google BRT issues will provide many pointers to what ails BRT.
  3. Monorail as feeders to the metro..as the discussions have hinted its a very costly solution for a not so costly problem. The implementaitons of monorail the world over have been few and more so the successfully running ones.

What we have missed is the light rail transit option..its found that many cities accross europe and the americas use the light rail feature to decongest the roads. This provides a clean and a fast way to commute..

BETL pics - ready by Sep 2008?

Good friend Siva mailed in some pics of the elevated road currently under construction.

New e-procurement portal - transparency!?

I didn't know about this new e-procurement portal launched last year by the state government. Have a look here (site isn't setup right, watch the warnings). What should interest us most is "transparency". There is a section intended for "citizens", cool! But the citizen's page doesn't have much right now. A list of tenders is available, which shows up only two items. There is a news and information link too, but that leads to a third party commercial website.

Smart Cities Put People Before Cars - Lessons for Bangalore

It is no wonder then that the most vibrant cities in America — New York, Boston, San Francisco and Washington — are ones that have been able to curb the voracious appetite of the car for space. The cities we love around the world are the ones that have been able to devote more space to people and less to cars.

Policing the Police

Governance

I was on my daily dinner routine. Happened to see this on-duty police person walking out of his official patrol van called ‘Hoysala'. He walked up to the cashier of this local restaurant, grabbed some money, and was matter-of-factly walking back. Not that this was the first time I saw such a thing - but, I don't know what became of me (perhaps Bollywood effect?).
