Meeting with Mr Tripathy (BMTC)

Public Transport

A few of us are meeting Mr Upendra Tripathy (BMTC) this Thursday. Unfortunately, we couldn't get to organize this as a broader and open-to-all-who-are-interested type of meeting. But, we will:

  • Talk to him and explore ways of connecting our upcoming "working group" here with BMTC
  • Try to show him as much of the good suggestions that have come up here so far

Dedicated bus lanes - a presentation for BBMP

TrafficPublic Transport

I made a presentation yesterday to Mr.Subramanya (BBMP Commisioner) at his office about the single bus lane idea. He was quite interested and said he would discuss with his committee and revert. He also agreed very well that the solution was not to build or widen more roads or flyovers. He also mentioned some problems that are being faced with the underpasses construction on Bellary road - the actual costs were much higher than anticipated because numerous problems had cropped up - conduits for sewerage, water, telephone, electricity, etc that were marked incorrectly on admittedly very old drawings that now need to be re-aligned !

[Here is the presentation, prepared with a lot of help from folks and material here on Praja]

Driving - what are the chances ...

What are the chances of you reaching the destination in time and alive if you are driving and followed all traffic rules?

UP state - Road to prosperity

Public Transport

Road to Prosperity - UP offers investment opportunities in Transport Sector.

That's the caption to the half page ad by the Transport Commissioner, UP, in today's leading newspapers (page 15, TOI).

Salient points (as appearing in the ad), and my comments are as below:

Taking the bus: Pick up routes

Case Study: Taking the Bus

Navshot, digs into his company's efforts at providing a bus service to its employees and comes with some very interesting insights. Amongst other things, he discusses issues in route planning, user expectation, working with BMTC, scalability, quality of service issues and factors influencing them.

Mangalore Bangalore Train - Will it be canceled

Commuter RailPublic Transport

[Warning - still no source or reference for this development. So treat it as discussion, not 'news' in any sense. Anyone has a reference or quote, please provide one here - {editor}]

Its really a shocking news that the train from Bangalore to Mangalore will stand canceled from First of June 2008 as per the decision taken by the Railway board saying that it is non profitable.

Does anyone know that since the beginning of the said 6517 & 6518 trains, there is a minimum of 300 waiting lists of passengers. Then how can you say that it is not a profitable route. In order to make the people tired of the journey the trains reach the destination 2 to 3 hours after time. With this they want to make the people commuting on the trains be less and prove the fact that the route is non profitable. But please dont feel that the people of Karnatka are silent spectators. They will be aggressive once their morale is hurt. Dont try to put hand in lions mouth and try to count its teeth.

Why not extend Namma Metro to BIAL ?

I have been reading at various forums and news papers and it is now clear that the planning authorities goofed up by not thinking about rail connectivity to the new BIAL. Now various suggestions are being made and one that is louder than the rest is that a dedicated rail link be provided from MG Road to the BIAL. Which in my opinion is utterly stupid and expensive.

BMTC Bus stops - Official and unofficial

As i drive daily to work - (i live off Old Madras Road (OMR) and my workspot is near the Bangalore dairy), it is frustrating to see the haphazard bus stops of BMTC, that has a severe impact on traffic. Let me give a couple of examples in my route.

BRTS/Bus lane from Indiranagar to E-City?

Public Transport

One option for a BRTS in Bangalore could be from Indiranagar/Domlur to E-City after the airport shifts and the elevated expressway comes up.

Once the airport shifts, the pressure on the IRR will come down. Once the elevated expressway comes up one lane can be dedicated to the BRTS on Hosur Road (at the bottom).
