The Challenged Private Sector

Bus

Private bus operators at Kalasipalyam, who have been transporting commuters for about 60 years now, still await the day they will get a separate bus stand. There are about 250 private buses that ply daily between the City Market and nearby Hosur, Kolar, Magadi, Tumkur and Chikballapur.

2.94 crore cases pending!

Our judiciary, which can arguably be described as one of the least dsyfunctional organs of our nation (however slow). Still, it is overburded with 2.94 crore cases! That is about 29.4 million cases!

Urban and Real Estate Chaos - New urban policy on the anvil

We all know how chaotic the real estate scence is in Bangalore. Nearly 99% of all buildings have some violations of some sort. Some are totally gross blatant disregard for the law and while others happily add extra floors and compromise on setback area and parking areas.

Notes from BMRC meeting

Putting up a placeholder post for logs from the BMRC meeting today. 8 of us were present, so we should expect at least that many notes here.

BIAL-RTI Progress Update

Aviation

Prajagale,

Before we are overtaken by great things that are happening on Praja front, it is time to share some progress update on BIAL-RTI efforts. Here is a summary of the progress so far:

Police Accountability Authority

The constitution of a Police Accountability Authority to take care of the acts of omission and commission by the police personnel and the setting up of a State Police Board to cater to a strategic policing plan, figure prominently in the draft New Karnataka Police Act.

Commuter Rail - Will it really help ?

Commuter RailPublic Transport

As most of us are aware, the track record of suburban railways in the larger Indian cities has been pathetic. Other than Mumbai, there is'nt a single example where such a service has successfully attracted commuters & helped reduce road congestion. Most of them have been total failures.

Traffic finally flows across CBI Jn Magic Box

Infrastructure

Finally The CBI Jn seems to be open to public, Not sure if some lessons have been learnt... There is no tar on the road still! Its got this "super rubble" finish that tests out vehicle road fitness!!!

BMTC - good things announced

BusPublic Transport

While we continue to expect more from BMTC here on Praja, good things are being announced by the government. CM kicked off work for a TTMC at Kengeri, and while doing that, he announced (quoting TOI) a bus station in every locality and a depot every 5 km, in the next few years. Thats sweet, but sheltered bus stands with clear display of bus information would be sweeter.

Mafia-controlled Bangalore

That's where Bangalore 's land mafia comes in. With the courts tied up in knots, gangsters offer to secure deeds in days rather than years. "Businesspeople like to do their business, but many times the system does not permit them to do it," says Gopal Hosur, the city's joint police commissioner. "Because of escalating land values, unscrupulous elements get involved.

CTTP Review – Further Comments & Inputs

Public Transport

Hi Suhas, went through your assessment of the CTTP & the discussions that followed – various comments & many relevant, valid points have surfaced.

There are a few issues I would like to fill in :

Bangalore Mass Transit - Summary of Past Study Reports

The first CTTP for Bangalore had been carried out in 1963-64 by the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI, New Delhi). This study, though termed “Comprehensive” had focused on the road system, & had proposed construction of 138 km of ring roads, 77.5 km arterial roads & various grade separators, pedestrian subways and truck terminals.

An effort to refresh the data & update the proposals was made by the BDA (Town Planning Dept) in 1977. One of its recommendations was to look into a mass rapid transit project, i.e. a Metro system, or similar.

This hade been taken up by a high-level Committee in 1981 & the Lynne Committee, that had been appointed, agreed that a Metro study was warranted, and a team from Southern Railways, Chennai (Madras, then) was commissioned to do this.

In 1983, the Southern Railway team recommended a 2-corridor Metro of 24 km, & also 3 commuter rail lines, and a 58-km ring railway over a 25-year period. No action followed this proposal.

Private sector challenge

“If you need to understand the difference between STUs and private operators, you need to compare the services provided by private operators in districts like Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, and those offered by STUs in fully nationalized districts like Gulbarga and Raichur", says Rajavarma Ballal, president of the state federation of private bus operators.

Suggestion of Revision of train services between Bangalore and Mysore after track doubling

Public Transport

Mysore Bangalore track doubling is going to be completed by 2011. But, this is not the end of the woes to the travellers. The effective utilization of the doubled track by railways is the key to success.
