The road ahead ….. on roads

This is a followup to the road working group call, we (nithin, asj and myself) had a couple of weeks back. After that, I also talked to a contractor who has built roads (Pradeep). The consolidated "whats the story" is below, in the format of question/answers. Needs a lot more work and refining, but feel free to comment on the work so far. Also, if you want to call in and give your feedback, send me a private message.

Footpaths upgraded but width reduced

I live in Kumarapark (BBMP Ward No 77) and i was initially pleased to see the footpaths getting a face lift. Yes Serpentine road is having spanking new machine finished granite slabs to cover the drain and make for the footpath.

Sanity Check: A Namma Metro link to Bengaluru International Airport

About 40 days ago, I had raised the issue of a "Sanity Check" on the proposed High Speed Rail Link (HSRL) to Bengaluru International Airport. The issues I raised were :

  • Sanity Check 1: Who is the target customer of the HSRL ?
  • Sanity Check 2: Convenience
  • Sanity Check 3: Close integration with Namma Metro and BMTC
  • Sanity Check 4: Affordability
  • Sanity Check 5: Financial Viability

Basavanagudi Traffic Regulation

BIAL RTI Progress - Response from DGCA

Time to share the RTI response received from Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)in in response to one of the RTI applications filed with them. Here is the copy of the responses.

Cycling in Bangalore!!

How many of you believe that
1. Cycle is a sustainable mode of transportation?
2. Cycling in Bangalore is possible?
3. You are faster on you cycle than you car in Bangalore?

Let me share my view on these :

Jayanagar Constituency Grievance center!

Mr N Mukund informs us that Jayanagar now has a Grievance Center. So if you are a resident of that constituency, and have complaints or suggestions, all you have to do is pick up a phone and call the helpline!

IRC Road markings & signs

I am not doing a summary here of the IRC codes for road markings. I ordered a copy and got it yesterday and flipped through it. The norms / guidelines cover the basics well. Significantly, there is clear guideline on GIVE WAY - markings.

A most compelling story

I was born and raised in Bangalore in a traditional old bungalow in the heart of the city in National College Circle in Basavangudi. It was gifted to me by my late aunt with much love over 20 years ago. To my great sorrow, this property will soon be destroyed by the disastrous planning of the 'Namma Metro'.

Traffic Diversion and Flow During Construction of BRTS

Can somebody help in providing links or suggestions for Construction Management Techniques for concrete and type and traffic diversion for contruction of an elevated road on a major arterial road?

Competition without regulation, like this

BMTC and privatization

I see this every other day on my commute, and to many who back competition and liberalization in public transport as a possible solution, this picture represents the fear keeping them from being vocal supporters of the idea. On one side, you have a 3-4 year old nice big bus. Pushing it out of the stand though is a 15 year old vehicle which would be worth a lot less than the bribes it'd take to get operating licenses from RTO.

Anybody still believes BMTC can deliver?

The presence of buses at the flagging-off ceremony seems to have been symbolic, as was the schedule given by the depot and the confirmation by officials that the buses were in operation. And as of this morning, more than a week later, the opinionforming, feedback-providing public is yet to make its acquaintance with the mysterious Marco Polo.

Pune - Cycle Track

I have clicked a few snaps on Pune -Satara road between KK market signal and Big Bazzar on 11 Nov 2008 (9.00 - 9.30 AM). The entire stretch on both sides of the BRT is almost complete. Though I have taken snaps on the way to swargate the situation is more or less the same on either sides of cycle track.

Healthcare-less

The sole 50-bed burns ward in the state at Victoria Hospital is in a pathetic state. Broken window panes, improper ventilation, fading walls, broken bathroom doors and shortage of sufficient cubicles for the privacy of the patients, are the other ills dogging the ward. The hospital authorities blame the PWD for the sorry state of affairs.
