What are they widening?

Where's the widening in roadwidening?

A very good piece of investigation work. Uncovered the incompetence that is BBMP. We need somebody to step in and stop these people from causing any damage to the city. Its like a mental institution on the loose.

A small note for IAS aspirants - Civil Services Examination

Wanted Praja to host an often requested note on civil services examination. Hope it is okay to host this one-off small note for IAS aspirants.

City of Shame - No hospital beds, ventilator for poisoned kids

Have you heard!, Bangalore doesn't have ventilators for poisoned children. This is the news in Deccan Herald. It is not enough that a stone hearted mother decided to poison her 2 children and herself, hospitals, government and private could not provide the needed timely help. All had one thing to say. No ventilators in Namma Bengaluru . Another feather of SHAME in its crown.

2010-11 BBMP Budget is out, first from an elected body after a long while. Saw the print edition of DH with some details of it, their website is currently down. Will link up after it wakes up!.

In the mean time, read the headlines from today's Hindu here.

Public service delivery in Indian cities

Here is a review of a book on urban spending. It substantiates most of what we have been saying variously on Praja. The review highlights an example of how BBMP is spending 32 times lesser than the norm for streetlights. This translates into lower coverage and bad maintenance.

Campaign - Support Metro @ Whitefield Stn (Kadugodi)

Metro at Bangalore is the right step forward towards making this city truly international. This will not only reduce congestion on our overloaded road transport but will also be environment friendly. The need to cut trees for road widening or using own vehicle for commuting will be nullified to a great extent. Travel by Metro will be convenient, safe and affordable for all.

Setting sights on KSRTC, what say?

We have discussed BMTC a lot. Tons of suggestions, some of which have gone in. Some of us here helped create the Bus Day event. We pulled lots of data out on their operations. etc etc. Wanted to check if we can set our sights on KSRTC now.

Metro digging work on ITPL road, Whitefield !?

Did anyone else notice the serious digging work going on around ITPL/Mahadevapura main road? This isn't some here and there soil testing type thing, they are making a continuous long trench on the north sidewalk of the main road going to ITPL. What's up? Phase-1 extension till ITPL - just can't be? Or has Phase-2 work begun now? Could be something else. Some pictures:

Feeder bus service - at last

Feeder service has been introduced between the City Central station and KBS/Majestic. Excerpts from the article below (from DH Metro; link - http://www.deccanherald.com/content/91083/enjoying-free-ride.html):

Mayor shelves road widening

Just happened to come across this news from couple of weeks ago. BBMP Mayor finally shelves the road widening plans. Temporarily? Your guess is as good as mine.

Aug/6 - Chronicle:

Car usage disincentives - it's happening

Are you a resident of Mizoram capital Aizawl? If yes, do not buy a car until you have a garage or parking space. Grappled with constant traffic snarls, Mizoram has finally found a way out, banning the sale of vehicles to any individual who does not own a garage or parking space. A car purchased after August 30 will be viewed illegal if its owner does not possess a garage or parking space.

Well done, Mr Commissioner

ASI Nagarajappa and constables Venkatesh, Veerabhadraiah and Nagappa attached to Sanjaynagar police station were suspended, pending a departmental inquiry. On August 2, they barged into an apartment where a birthday party was being celebrated and illegally detained some persons and demanded money for their release.
