Urban Development

Bangalore Urban Planning Center

GOK and IISC will come together to establish a Center for Infrastructure, Sustainable Transportation and Urban Planning (CiSTUP). I really like the idea of an institution like IISC heading this effort.

Bangalore and Ribbon Development

Ribbon Development

Classic definition of Ribbon Development is building houses and businesses along the roads radiating from a town. Dictionary definition of the term is "building complex in a continuous row along a road". The term comes from observations in the west in early 20th century when personal automobiles made it possible for people to live far from the city, and many chose to build houses next to the radial highways leading in to the city.

Bangalore context

In Bangalore's context, the Ribbon Development phenomena is see in similar and different ways.

Urban development - the skill gap

Time for a boring post. A habitual visitor to MoUD website, I was waiting to put up a small summary of a policy paper that showed up recently. Its called "Capacity building scheme for urban ...". If that was all greek and latin to you, jump to section 3 (page 9) on that pdf, and under "specific capacity gaps", find things that you and me complain about everyday - they don't know how to plan, how to run projects, how to handle public relations etc etc etc.

Jaime Lerner's Presentation at TED Talk (BRTS, design and city planning)

I stumbled on this nice TED talk by Jaime Larner. Jaime Larner is an architect and urban planner. He is well know for the BRT systems that he introduced in Curitiba (an industrial hub in South Brazil)as a mayor of that city. He is also know for converting the gridlocked commercial artery city into a spacious pedestrian mall(!!!).

Mobility empowers

Automobility enervates, because more cars mean more congestion, less mobility

CAF PIL on Bangalore Master Plan 2015

Vijayan Menon, resident Bangalorean and an urban planning citizen enthusiast, forwards us the documents related to the Public Interest Litigation(PIL) filed by the Citizens Action Forum(CAF), the Koramangala Initiative(KI) and several residents of Bangalore, challenging BDA's Draft Revised Master Plan - 2015. Also included is the Report of the Advisory Committee on the Draft Revised Master Plan -2015, also called the PSS Thomas Committee Report, which was set up to analyse citizens feedback.

2000 acres for IT park, what about other things?

I am terribly sorry. But I have an issue with developments like these - new IT park on 2000 acres around the city (source: DH). No, I am not going to speak the beaten line of farmland acquisition. I am not anti development at all, but I speak for us, the urban dwellers who lead close to miserable lives in this city today.

The government is setting up a sprawling IT park on 2,000 acres around the City to create the much-needed space for IT firms to expand their activities.

Wonderful news, and the plans look good. But lets do some maths now.

Enhancing school education to counter some everyday problems

From the various discussions on Praja we observe everyday problems such as
- Corruption
- Traffic congestion and chaos
- Unorganized & uncontrolled urban growth
- Complete lack of civic sense and amenities
- Pollution (land, air and noise pollution) and it's affects on health

Very Good News!

Manya Prajare, (Respected Citizens)

It gives me great pleasure to inform you that Shri Suresh Kumar, Rajajinagar MLA has become the Minister for Urban Development (MuDA). MuDA is a key post which controls BDA, BMRDA, BIAPPA and nearly all TMCs, CMCs and hence holds the key "real estate" post.
