BMTC

  • BMTC - good things announced

    BusPublic Transport

While we continue to expect more from BMTC here on Praja, good things are being announced by the government. CM kicked off work for a TTMC at Kengeri, and while doing that, he announced (quoting TOI) a bus station in every locality and a depot every 5 km, in the next few years. Thats sweet, but sheltered bus stands with clear display of bus information would be sweeter.

  • Bangalore bus system

Bus transport system is synonymous with BMTC in Bangalore. Though BMTC claims to be the best city bus system in the country, and rightly so, many feel that it can do better, and play a significant role in decongesting the traffic conditions in city.

  • Bangalore Public Transport

From having a single state wide bus operator serving the city in early ninties, public transportation scenario in Bangalore has come a long long way. The city boasts of having the best city bus transport corporation (BMTC), it will get is first Metro rail by end of 2010, and there is talk of monorail and bus rapid transport system (BRTS) as well.

  • CCTF Report

A Commuter Comfort Task Force (CCTF) was setup in 199x to suggest improvements to Bangalore's public transportation system. Since BMTC bus was the only mode of public transport, this task force was essentially setup to consult with BMTC. CCTF produced a report outlining some suggestions, most important of which was around routing of BMTC buses.

  • Traffic Congestion – Possible case for a PIL

    Traffic

As outlined below, the formation of the prescribed bodies to tackle traffic congestion & to improve living conditions in the city was completed some time ago as recommended. Despite this, no concrete steps seem to be planned to stem the rot. The same old solutions continue to be doled out – the usual widening of roads after felling more trees & introducing more bus routes. These temporary solutions have been making things worse as widening roads invites more vehicles & the losers continue to be pedestrians & public transport users.

  • So, will BMTC do one of this?

    Public Transport

I was waiting for one of these two to happen. What if:

    1. BMTC bids to operate buses in liberalized UP transport sector?
    2. BMRC (Bangalore Metro) orders its own fleet of buses to make sure it gets good numbers to reliably reach all their stations?
  • Killer BMTC / Lorries? Who is the real Culprit?

Most of the low speed (city) fatal accident reports have a common phrase, "came under the wheel". A victim is usually crushed under these heavy vehicles resulting in serious injuries or death. But I have not heard of this happening with a Volvo bus or cars. Why? Are they not heavy enough?

  • Bus Bays - Traffic management is 'space' management

If we really think about it, traffic management boils down to efficient 'space' management. How best do you manage the utilisation of a finite commodity like space on the streets? All measures taken or discussed to de-congest, improve, smoothen traffic by advocating lane discipline, platooning, sync signal lights, parking, foot paths, lesser private vehicles, efficient public transport, car pooling etc boils down to this. MANAGE AVAILABLE ROAD SPACE.

  • New underpasses/flyovers on ORR - a suggestion

    Public Transport

Marathahalli UnderpassYou may have noticed that Outer Ring Road upgrade work is picking up serious momentum. Work on service lanes is in full swing, and it seems like survey work is on for the new underpass/flyovers as well. So if all goes well, we should have a nice six lane "corridor" from Hebbal to silk board junction. Good show indeed! At the same time, it'll be good to look ahead at the impact of this ORR upgrade project.

  • Bus stop pain points

Bus stops next to signals and the auto drivers' driving menace  into the bus stops when a bus is supposed to reach the stop:
