Two long up and down ramps will be made on the Hebbal Main Road. Two box underpasses will allow vehicles to move from Banglore Palace towards Malleswaram, and those coming from Cauvery junction to take a right turn towards Malleshwaram. As the ramps will need embankments, it is estimated that this project will take more time. The cost is estimated at Rs 2.5 crore and will take approximately 45 days to complete.

Just as i had gone to the BDA junction to watch the marking for the Magic Box flyover , One of the engineers told me that the High grounds police station is going down today... I said to myself Ummm..... Finally the recently renovated Highgrounds police station is goin down. Its possibly sad to see this landmark of Bangalore going down but i guess its a necessary evil to accomodate the fresh traffic towards and from the BIAL Airport.

some questions

From today's Times of India

The BBMP launched the precast elements after 10 pm on Monday. It has so far completed excavation works in coordination with BWSSB, which has shifted utilities like sewerage and water supply lines. Officials said unlike Cauvery junction, vehicles will be allowed on one side of the Bellary Road during the day time, while work load will be doubled at night. Pre-cast elements have been stocked near BDA junction to facilitate easy work. BBMP has promised to complete works on this junction in 45 days to provide the signal free road to the international airport.

This underpass has two components — 30 elements will be installed at the BDA junction and the remaining 15 will be installed at the Palace-Guttahalli junction. The latter will facilitate U-turn to Bashyam Circle-bound vehicles from Mehkri Circle.

some questions.
does this this mean at BDA jn, the underpass would look like this (and not like as shown in the model above)? Two passes? The photoyogi's pics also seem to suggest that.


Another question, what exactly is the position of the 15-element u-turning underpass at guttehalli?
the reason i ask is i am not sure which of these is correct (assuming moving from WM towards MC)
#1. climb up the ramp at BJ then down the ramp then again up the ramp at GJ then again down the ramp and then turn left at CJ?
#2. climb up the ramp at BJ, stay up, down the ramp at GJ and then turn left.

i think two is better since anyways everybody turns left at CJ there is no problem of merging on Belary road. but if BJ and GJ are too far off then it might be expensive to do so.

BBMP re-designs traffic on Bellary road

BANGALORE: Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has modified its design of overpass near BDA junction as its earlier design ran a risk of creating a brand new traffic junction.

As the traffic from Mekhri Circle going towards Vyalikaval could not be allowed to take a right turn at Cauvery junction, the same traffic is now made to take a turn near National Tuberculosis Institute (NTI). The median is already removed.

But does it not create a new traffic junction? How can traffic move on the Bellary Road without hindrance? Palike chief engineer Krishna Reddy has a solution.

“We will make another box overpass at this junction too. In fact, the earlier design had a provision for pedestrian underpass there. The same will be expanded to accommodate light motor vehicles,” he said.

Slow traffic

AT best, the traffic on the Bellary road will move but slowly. Whether the total time of travel would be less that the earlier waiting time at signals, only motorists can tell once they start using all the four boxes.

The U turn will be allowed near NTI and that would slow down the traffic and when combined with slowdown due to the box underpass near Cauvery junction, the time delay would be as much as a halt at traffic signal.

Further, the traffic from Kumarakripa towards High Grounds would cause a traffic block near Windsor Manor.

No comment on time

KRISHNA Reddy said that the work would be completed as fast as possible. How about doing it in 72 hours?

“We are not announcing any deadline. We will work as fast as possible so that motorists are put to minimum inconvenience,” he said.

Why?

Why cant people be made to use the BDA junction underpass to take the U turn? Its just a few yards ahead from NTI. Why build another underpass? Are there any engineers even applying their brains to all these schemes? 3 underpassess within half a kilometer and even that not broad enough in most parts. God save Bangalore.

BDA Jn U-Turn

This is my guess at why they moved the u-turn. I think this is how the u/p at bda jn. will open. ... a) between CJ & WM you go over the U/P. b) between PR & VS Raju Rd(VR) you go under the U/P. c) all left turns are free. d) two right turns PR->CJ & VR->WM (yellow) e) two right turns WM->PR & CJ->VR (green) so under the u/p there will be traffic moving in all directions. i dont see how they can manage it without a signal controlling the right turns. adding the CJ->CJ uturn here will only add to the load here. looks like they donot want to carry over the traffic from CJ over to BDA downstream. If they separate CJ->CJ uturn, there is one more advantage, potentially at the BDA jn, they can achieve this: to do this they have to eliminate right turns WM->PR & CJ->VR. one way to do it would be to introduce u-turns on VR for WM->PR and one on PR for CJ->VR. if they can do it, then at the bda jn itself, in the worst case this would require two phase signal for vehicles moving under the u/p. so that PR->CJ and VR->WM right turns are possible and at all times atleast one direction is moving. This is ofcourse the worst case. Better signal phasing is possible so that more traffic flows. get back with NTI u-turn later.

Thats right Subba, the line diagram you have made is probably more like how its going to finally look like.your trafic flow analysis is very enlighting!
When i Last spoke with the engineers Next the work should start off at the Anand nagar section then the Windsor Manor.

/me will be travelling between 5th and 12th if some one could also fillin details on the progress updates it will be great

...of how much we crib we must appreciate Mr Subramanya. He is a beacon of hope in BBMP. He has been bold enough to try out new ways of doing things and is succeding. We need more men like him. He has given life to the cliche, where there is a will there a way.

I wish he were as considerate to pedestrians

Agree that Dr. Subramanya has at least taken a novel approach and used cheaper technology.  They need to consider upstream and downstream impacts a bit better rather than hoping or assuming things will improve.

I just wish they did 1/10 as much for pedestrians.  Was driving down old Madras Road.  After the Suranjan Das road crossing (going towards Hoskote) there is no pavement at all!  Or try crossing KH Road or Nrupathunga Road (near Martha's). 

I saw an article in TOI where one of the BBMP persons said that they were seeing if costs could be justified for more skywalks.  How is it that flyovers don't see to go through the same gates?  Or some tall tower?  One way to cost justify skywalks is to sue the BBMP and BTP for every pedestrian death to the tune of 1 crore or so.  All costs would be justified then.

BDA Jn Underpass Updates

Hi All,
Back after a brief holiday, I Really dont see much Work that seems to have happend at the BDA Jn since the 5th of March. (Sad Sad!)
When I asked around last night I was told by the local traffic cops that work was stalled since a week, as the road was beeing widened.

It seems that as ususal they have now realised that
the section from Cauvery Jn, down towards the BDA Jn, at the turn off towards Palace
Once the Ramp is in place the mentioned section would become too narrow hence they are now looking at chewing into the Footpath see image. http://flickr.com/photos/photoyogi/2332990530/sizes/m/

Currently the concreting work is going on.

The Ramp work on the opp side ie BDA Jn to Windsor Manor seems to be having slow progress with excavation work again -- Not too happy case.

isn't there a bit of ped traffic in that area? will come back to haunt them. if they are widening the road then it looks like they are not going eliminate right turns from cauvery jn to vs raju rd. they could have cut out some of the median on the palace road and made the vehicles stop a bit back on palace road. that would have given them place for vehicles to make the right in a nice little arc. might involve eating into some ped space at the corners, but that is ok. can start the zebra from the ends instead of the corner. i think overall they should focus on achieving 1+2x2+1 system.

thats an awesome ramp drawing. is the base length right? any idea how tall the boxes are? tree looks set for sacrifice. where is the tree in the first picture you posted? behind the mixer? i hope they have signals to control all the turning to palace road. that is one huge blind spot. thats an interesting question. whats gong on, why is work not moving? looks like even the earth work is not done for the ramps.

TS, The Ramp base length is is "somewhat" accurate as i have noted the excavation point of the ramp on the other side of the road.(Palace Lodge side)
There will be a certain amount of compression as the photograph is essentially 2D.
When you compare it with the initial photo, the tree is behind the mixer as you have pointed out. Reg the work progress the only earth work that was not done is the one shown in the photo, other 3 sides are done.

BDA Jn ramp -- Work Starts

The BDA Jn saw some activity today :-) Looks like some one is visiting this site often enough ? In my earlier comment i thought its going to be a conventional ramp and that would take much longer to build. Well time to smile, its a precast hollow structure which they call "cellular boxes" see pictures this gets filled with sand and other loose gravel and gets compacted. Before which these boxes get linked to one another by a system of bolts. Umm i seem to have more confidence that they are going to finish BDA junction well on time! The Current 'U' is probably a temporary thing to allow traffic to move from Cauvery junction to Malleshwaram. The Final traffic flow may be some thing like this TS : I cant agree with you more on the fact that at the road level its going to be a bit of confusion hence the signals. BDA Jn update 22 Mar 08

The work over the past few days does not seem to have progressed at any great pace I must say. A few questions gave me the likely reasons for the delay - mainly being that the 'Cellular Boxes' were not being produced fast enough, the contractor was told to have 30 moulds for the cement casting he has about 8 working. Generally looking around for other work that seems to have happened : the Post tensioning process seems to have been done on 2 cables (Post tension process is a process by which the magic box elements are pulled together by a compressive force of about 40-50T) Now i noted These are some cracks that seem to have appeared after the post-tension process. Now I am not sure who is to blame : The Technology or The execution. I do feel hollow that this is the state of implementation. -- Praveen Sundaram AkA PhotoYogi

We have to be vigilant about this process and educated / informed citizens should step forward to audit this process. Only then we can avoid infrastructure collapse like the one in Hyderabad

excellent job sir for excellent diagram, excellent pix and excellent initiative. looks like a pre-fabricated problem. interesting to see how they'll fix this. also 'nother q. in the diagram you made, why is the turn on the northern half of the u/p and not the southern half. because North half would be wrong side. but if they allow u-turn in the north half, then traffic in only one direction needs to be red when the u-turn is green. palace to ghalli traffic can continue. is this what you had in mind?

10 lane road from CBI Jn!!!

'Connectivity before launch' DHNS BBMP officials on Tuesday assured that all pending works with regard to connectivity to the international airport will be completed before its launch on May 11. BBMP Commissioner Dr S Subramanya told reporters here the seven underpasses from High Grounds Police Station to Hebbal flyover will be completed before inauguration of the airport. “The Cauvery theatre underpass has been completed, the underpass at BDA junction will be completed within 45 day followed by underpasses at Anandnagar and CBI junction,” he said. Dr Subramanya said a 10-lane road, the first of its kind in Bangalore, will be constructed from the CBI junction. This will also feature a 1.5-metre bicycle lane on either side of the road. However, work on this will begin only after two service roads are laid. Defending the pre-cast underpasses, he said the projects were approved after detailed planning and based on the traffic surveys. “Around 1.16 lakh vehicles ply from each direction on Sankey Road. Once the airport begins operations, over 40,000 additional vehicles will be added. Pre-cast underpasses are designed to withstand the weight of a battle tank and also a missile attack.” :) Principal Secretary (infrastructure) V P Baligar said all pending works, including the trumpet-intersection, will be completed before the airport begins operations. =============================== :) how 'bout 40T pretensioning?

10 lane?

Believe me, this is really hype. I don't see that much of space over there. It could be 6 lanes + 2 lanes of service roads. Even if they do manage to squeeze in 8 lanes + 2 lanes of service roads (which might be the case), what's the use? Hebbal flyover is just 4 lanes. Even the least educated can tell from looking at the design that its going to be a flop. I mean, 8 lanes from CBI to Hebbal flyover is an over-design. Unless, they have some plans of creating some other "magic" and make the flyover 8 lane!

I think what he means by 10 lanes is an 'upto' 10 lanes..like they say at discount sales of 'upto 50%'. No fixed lanes!

 

Like it happens now on other roads..we can go asking the other cars driver to increase the volume to listen to a song being played while stuck in traffic or something I do always..check time from the digital clock on all tata indicas!

The best was one day when a bmtc bus came really close to my car that bus passengers were actually were trying getting down from the bus into my car!

10 lanes of chaos?

My hypothesis for Bangalore traffic is that more lanes = more lanes of chaos.  We simply don't believe in driving in lanes, one behind the other.  See Residency Road and Richmond Road.  They are a sight to behold in peak hours.

 

Debottlenecking takes the backseat.  Deforestation takes the front seat.

Great indian rope trick?

Apparently the magic box has collapsed on thursday afternoon. Found it here but have not been able to see other newspapers yet. Anyone has any more information or photos?

It is just the approach road that has collapsed and not the underpass itself.

Its all got to do with the way things are put together..TOI says its operational again!

obviously, the grand scheme scheme of things involves more than pre-cast structures. any thing that flows you've got to respect its physics be it vehicles or water. i was expecting the u/p to leak. i was wrong. very very surprising that the ramp caved in. should have been known terrain for the paalike. would have guessed they woul dhave mastered the art of retaining walls after all those underpasses. (well not really, remember last year ulsoor lake bund collapsed). hopefully people dont take this as a failing of the magic boxes themselves. its got nothing to do with it.

Incidentally abt what TS said..I got this news from the milk man in the morning...he went like 'hosa kaveri bridge biddu hoyitu'!

But I am sure Bangalore public, smart as they are, will appreciate the work!

Cool but ugly

the picture shows how shabby the work is,... why do they have to hoard politicians pictures and posters even near the underpass?? why not make it more aesthetic and functional.. Its great that BBMP is taking charge of the situation with Underpasses but quality always sucks be it implementing or design...

BDA Jn ramp - Update

Update March 30th 2008, With the Rains damping some work at the BDA Jn it has also helped in allowing sand and stone to settle a bit. The second layer of "cellular boxes" (ramp side walls) seem to be getting into place. Also noticed that the exteem elements seem to be undergoing some interlinking work (Photos to follow) This is in addition to the post-tensioning cables. Was this in the plan ? or an after-thought "just to make sure its held tight. Also noticed that there now seems to be new RCC cage being built at the entry-exit of the magic box this should provide some additional protection to the elements. -- Praveen Sundaram AkA PhotoYogi
