Dear Friends,

Justice Bhaktavatsala's remarks in the High Court legitimizing the criminal act of domestic violence have horrified the city and indeed the entire country.

To protest such absolutely misogynistic mindset reflecting the dominant attitudes of society that sanction violence against women, we are gathering in protest on Monday September 10, 2012 from 12.30 pm onwardsIf you wish to join us in the protest, kindly email us in advance so we can inform you (later) about the site of the protest.

Please come dressed in black and we will stand in silence with placards to express our outrage over Justice Bhaktavatsala's actions.  (If you prefer to bring your own messages, please note that displaying them will be subject to review by Vimochana and other organisers).

Following the protest we will present the attached memorandum to the Chief Justice. If you wish to endorse the memorandum, please email us your name, affiliation and contact details no later than Sunday night (9th September).

We look forward to your endorsement and/or your presence in the protest.

All of us from Vimochana.

Dear friends,

Thank you  for the overwhelming response to the petition demanding appropriate action against certain anti-women remarks and action of Justice Bhaktavatsala, Judge of the High Court of Karnataka.

It appears that the system has responded to pressure and protest across the country against Justice Bhaktavatsala’s remarks in Court in matrimonial cases and family matters.  News reports confirm that he will not be handling family court cases any more.  While this is a welcome gesture,  we must remember that the misogynist attitude that Justice Bhaktavatsala’s comments display,  are prevalent across the judiciary and it will take much effort,  protests and dialogue before we will even begin to see some attitudinal change.

Taking into account these developments, we are calling off the public action slated for Monday, 10th September.  However we will pursue the matter and take our concerns to the highest level of the Judiciary and the Law Department, so that there will not be a repeat of such blatant displays of anti-women stand in our Courts.

The memorandum that so many of you have endorsed will be submitted with appropriate changes to the Chief Justice and Law Minister.  In addition, we propose to hold a press conference to share these concerns with the wide public. Thanks again for expressing your solidarity with the issue.

Warm wishes, All at Vimochana
