Single body for all transportation works - Pune does it

Learning from mistakes and gaps at other cities - Pune could be doing that. Read this morning, with great interest that Pune has created a special purpose vehicle called Pune Infrastructure Development Corporation (PIDC). Quoting this story (PIDC cleared), this body will be:

Pune Metro - lets start tracking it here

A detailed project report for Pune Metro should be due out anytime now. Newspaper reports back in Aug had said the DPR should be out in a month. Not sure if it is out yet. Back on early 2007, Delhi Metro had floated several tenders for detailed project report (DPR) of Pune Metro.

Urban development, costs of Metro and Indian budget - a perspective

Metro Rail

In my arguments with regards BRTS, I often bring up the key but neglected and forgotten matter of cost-effectiveness of a given solution to our transportation problems. It should come as no surprise to most who are acquainted with my stance that I hate the idea of spending money without a clear crsip rationale and long term plan.  And the Metro falls under this category as far as I am concerned.

MMRDA officials have in the past replied in agreement to my suggestion that Mumbai Metro will not solve its problems at all. Given the fact that 10000 daily migrants to Mumbai will swell it to a city 30 million plus by 2030, it will be fair to say that whether Mumbai gets sea links or Metro rail, people will still be travelling in quasi or near stampede like situations and roads will always remain clogged.

Metro: Line 3??

The metro line from EC to Whitefield has been approved by the state government. Does anyone know what is the alignment of the line? It is still not available at the BMRC site. And the monorail map on BMRC website is most illegible. I would love to see where the new line connects to the planned two line?? -Srivatsava

The Karnataka state government is tripping over itself trying to expedite the High Speed Rail Link (HSRL) to the new Bengaluru International Airport (BIA), conservatively expected to cost Rs. 5,200 - Rs. 5,700 Crore by completion date, somewhere by 2012.

Success of Delhi Metro Phase One

http://indiatoday.digital... "But the only way to discourage the use of private vehicles is to provide alternatives—ones that are safe, reliable, fast and easily accessible. That is where a rail-based transit system taps into a metropolis' needs, becoming the lifeline of its economic activities. [...]

Tenders for 10 metro stations - details

Metro Rail

jayanagar stationFirst of all, I have no idea what that Deccan Chronicle article meant when it talked numbers like Rs 1 to 10 Crore per station. We have been noticing Bangalore Metro tenders in newspapers, all are available on BMRC website as well. Here are the details, with links to the tender pdf files:

  1. CMH Road + Byppanhalli stations - Rs 81 Crores (link)
  2. RV Road Terminal + Jayanagar - Rs 61 Crores (link)
  3. Tollgate + Hosahalli + Vijayanagar - Rs 98 Crores (link)
  4. Yeswantpur + Soap Factory + Mahalaxmi Nagar - Rs 111 Crores (link)

Namma Metro

I was supremely disappointed on reading this story in today's Deccan Chronicle. A quid pro quo with Bangalore for an elevated metro was to have good looking stations. Now we are going to get eyesores up in the sky, and are not even sure if there will be basic ameneties like lifts and escalators.
