Part I: BRTS

Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS)
Earlier (1999), a feasibility study for BRTS had identified a promising network of 20 corridors for bus routes comprising twin central rings intersected by 8 radial routes, with assistance from SIDA, Sweden. A pilot project of 12kms from Jayanagar to Shivajinagar with a combination of exclusive lanes with priority of passage at signals & construction of rapid transit lines was planned but never materialized & was abandoned without any attempt. There is no mention of this in the CTTP-2007 report, either. If this had commenced then, we might have seen it progress to some extent & at least, public opinion about the value of such quicker means of public travel would have been recognized.

Inter Modal Transit Terminal / Satellite Bus Terminus at Peenya

while the construction of an Inter Modal Transit Terminal or Satellite Bus Terminus at Peenya is welcome, i fail to understand why the parking space is only for 257 cars and 813 two wheelers

"Magic" Mistakes Done .. BBMP must think and step forward

First it was Cauvery Jn : With the narrow underpass, buses or slightly larger vehicles "are" passing through it, but the drivers have to slow down to make sure they don't damage the vehicles. There by slowing all the traffic behind. It was after this, even the BBMP seems to agree that it could have been wider.

Cemented Roads

Laying of cemented roads: In order to have long lasting roads, all roads should be cemented roads. Only a thin layer of bitumen or fine cement should be used for surface smoothness. Such cemented roads will

BIAL Trip - reports, photos and impressions

Thanks Shane et al from BIAL for the nice arrangements. We gathered at Minsk Square by 9, left for BIA at 9:35 am, reached in about 50 minutes. We were shown around till about 12:30, and were dropped back at Minsk by 1:30 pm. Unfortunately, they couldn't arrange a Vajra/Volvo for us. But all in all, the visit itself, and putting faces to many online identities was good fun! Praja visitors will be using this post to record their photos and impressions.

Want corridors, not flyovers

As Rithesh said here, Rammurthy Nagar under pass on ORR has moved jams to nearby signals. Jayadeva Circle flyover has made BTM 19th main signal and ORR/BG Road intersection area tougher to manage. Combination of Jayadeva circle and Dairy circle underpasses have made BG Road between the two points unmanageable. Flyover at silk board junction will soon stick out like a sore thumb once elevated Hosur Road is done, couple of more pillars and elevated road could have poured vehicles directly on ORR and Hosur Road.

Ideas for Bangalore - 2

Development of parks & gardens on either side of Devanahalli Airport Road:

The adventurous bus stands - K R Puram

There are a few of these special bus stands these days that exist right before a flyover or an underpass. Just as the road forks and grade separation begins, you find some crowd. Buses usually stops to block traffic heading towards the underpass or flyover. And pedestrians either have to run across flowing traffic, or wait in the middle of traffic to catch buses. Needless to say, you get a lot of 'almost' hit-and-run and screeching halt situations.

Ideas for Bangalore

Segregation of Residential & Commercial Localities: The recent Cabinet decision for mixed zoning is highly deplorable. Occurrence of commercial activities in residential areas and vice versa will spoil the peace, tranquility and greenery of our lovely city and state lead to tremendous noise and dust pollution and disturb the peace of the neighborhood. This decision should be IMMEDIATELY REVOKED.

Ring Roads - whats up BMRDA?

Whats up with BMRDA? Their website has been dead for almost an year now, though that is not the best measure or indicator of their activity levels. Their plans for developing satellite towns around Bangalore have a real shot at solving our city's problems by de-congesting it. But there haven't been concrete updates recently.

Urban Rail - The Chennai Experience

Sometime back, I remember reading a report in a magazine (published from either HongKong or Singapore) about the Chennai Suburban Rail (CRS) & the newer MRTS. This report, I think was actually based on a study for economic assistance for expansion of the Chennai MRTS (Phases 2 & 3).

Veritable death-traps

The report about the car crash in Krishnagiri (on the Bangalore-Chennai express-way) resulting in the death of two young men, and serious injuries to a young lady, published in your columns on the 29th, under the caption 'car did 90 km in one hour', made extremely sad reading.

Bus Turnouts

Bus turnouts are bus stop areas that are recessed from the thoroughfare. The turnout provides an en route bus with an off-street service point that does not interfere with traffic movement and provides a safe waiting area for transit users.
