Light Rail Transit (LRT)

We have seen ...

  1. Roads being discussed on praja and one thing that has come up is that the traffic manages to congest any space available, wide or not..
  2. BRTS..the current implementations are having teething issues than real problems. But there is still lot to be desired. To google BRT issues will provide many pointers to what ails BRT.
  3. Monorail as feeders to the metro..as the discussions have hinted its a very costly solution for a not so costly problem. The implementaitons of monorail the world over have been few and more so the successfully running ones.

What we have missed is the light rail transit option..its found that many cities accross europe and the americas use the light rail feature to decongest the roads. This provides a clean and a fast way to commute..

BETL pics - ready by Sep 2008?

Good friend Siva mailed in some pics of the elevated road currently under construction.

"Oil Addiction"

words made more famous by President Bush..but this is indeed a very bad habit that the world has got into.

Addiction and bad habits have been traditionally limited to bad effects for the individual and in some cases few people around(passive smokers). But in the case of oil, this affects the environment so bad that our existence itself is threatened by it!

New e-procurement portal - transparency!?

I didn't know about this new e-procurement portal launched last year by the state government. Have a look here (site isn't setup right, watch the warnings). What should interest us most is "transparency". There is a section intended for "citizens", cool! But the citizen's page doesn't have much right now. A list of tenders is available, which shows up only two items. There is a news and information link too, but that leads to a third party commercial website.

Smart Cities Put People Before Cars - Lessons for Bangalore

It is no wonder then that the most vibrant cities in America — New York, Boston, San Francisco and Washington — are ones that have been able to curb the voracious appetite of the car for space. The cities we love around the world are the ones that have been able to devote more space to people and less to cars.

Policing the Police

I was on my daily dinner routine. Happened to see this on-duty police person walking out of his official patrol van called ‘Hoysala'. He walked up to the cashier of this local restaurant, grabbed some money, and was matter-of-factly walking back. Not that this was the first time I saw such a thing - but, I don't know what became of me (perhaps Bollywood effect?).

Facelift for lakes - just new fences or more?

Back in January, BBMP had announced that it planned facelift for 17 lakes in and around the city. Cant find any newspaper articles to quote from, but this blog has it (17 lakes ...).

How does Europe & the rest of the world do it ?

Blrsri - referring to yr post elsewhere, & also in general, some issues that need to be highlighted ---

In USA /Europe & in rapidly developing far-eastern cities, the situation is very different, & solutions are found far more scientifically. They also have the advantage of much smaller populations & a more homogenous mix of users. This makes it easy for them to make changes as & when necessary with minimal objections or agitation. The old city of Rome is an example with very narrow streets, but traffic is very well controlled & directed, with efficient supervision & real-time monitoring.

As I see it, our difficulties are far more numerous & are summarized below.

Sustainable Prosperity, Climate Change Mitigation and Cultural Change

Hi! Here is a primer for a proposed world seminar series to create awareness and mobilise support for action about a new thinking for sustainable prosperity through the 21st Century and possible solutions that we shall need :

Kannada license plate numbers on the increase?

I am sure I will get my fair share of brickbats for this one but here goes...

Of late I have seen an increase in the number of vehicles with Kannada number plates. This is illegal per the provision of rule-50, sub-rule-2 and proviso-D of Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, which specifically states that letters on vehicle number plate should be in English and numerals in Arabic. The Government of India in a notification (No.SO. 444E dated June 12, 1989) issued under Section-41 (6) of the Motor Vehicle Act , 1988, also made these rules mandatory.

Parking Space

I am posting this as a blog entry as it will be a very good suggestion if implemented. We see lot buildings sprouting everywhere in Bangalore. Henceforth BDA / BMRDA / BBMP and all Municipalities & Panchayats should ensure that any building is constucted so that sufficient parking space is available. for example:

Part II: Non-Motorised User Facilities

Pedestrian Facilities
Excerpts from various sections of the CTTP report are as follows :
3.13.1.9: There is high pedestrian traffic in core area and some other areas in Bangalore. Footpath facilities are generally not adequate and their condition is deteriorating. Therefore up gradation of their facilities is very important.
5.5.8 (Preferred Strategy for Transport Development): Special facilities for pedestrians within the entire network specially in the core areas; Pedestrianization of selected shopping streets in side the core area going to be served by Underground sections of Metro; Provision of pedestrian sky walks, under passes, footpaths and other road furniture along the roads where necessary.
7.9: Recommends as many as 78 roads within ORR & 54 roads outside ORR for improvements & widening.
7.11.2.2 (Foot paths): Recommends a width of 2.0m for sidewalks for about 350 kms of city roads.
