Alipaak it happens only in Belgaum

“Alipaak” phonetically sounds exactly like the same word in Marathi.

Alipaak, a snack made with groundnuts, puffed rice accompanied with sugar cane juice.

POWER & SPEED create big holes in pockets

In the past few days, ‘Singh has become the King’, the share market is now again ready to take a leap upwards and Crude oil prices are heading only southwards. All these things are very nice for the common man. Today crude is trading at about 124.24$ which is of its high of almost 150$.

Welcome development in the power sector

The report in the papers about Karnataka's plan to set up a 2000 MW power plant in Chhattisgarh (vide report captioned 'Chhattisgarh plant to ease power woes' on page 7, TOI of 23rd July - the text is reproduced below, since, apparently because of a goof up by TOI, the 'link' is taking it to a diffrent text) denotes a refreshing change in the mind-set of the powers that be heading the state power sector.

Tree vandalisation, suspect - Lifestyle

Malls are a reality in today's world, whether one is prepared to accept them or not. While the main grouse against them is that they cause severe congestion, particularly when located at already busy traffic junctions without sufficient attention having been paid to channelise the increased traffic flow, there would, on the other hand, certainly be a fairly large section of the local population who welcome their presence in such close proximity. The Oasis mall in Koramangala is one such, about which debates on similar lines can go on endlessly.

Power drought hits Belgaum:6 to 12 hours power cut

Get ready for an almost black out. From today the 12 hours of load shedding will be done in the city. The CM, Yedurappa will make a statement in the assembly today on this and the timetable for the load shedding could be out.

Minutes of the July 19 meeting

We talked a lot, you can imagine the kind of conversations if people with ideas and opinions on just about anything Bangalore converge in one room.

Creative agency to improve driver behaviour

Spotted this interesting thing today. KRDCL is looking to hire a Creative Agency as consultant for spreading road safety awareness and improving road user behaviour in Bangalore. How much money is budgeted for this is not clear. Since KRDCL is putting this out, and not Traffic Police or BBMP, I am guessing this is part of the BTRAC-2010 (KRDCL is the nodal agency for it).

Here is the goal as listed in the document (click here to read) from KRDCL:

Dosa- Rs.25 Idli Rs.15 Puri Bhaji- Rs.20 Tea- Rs.6; Belgaum

Mouth-watering items but they are now making big holes in pockets.

As the inflation has peaked to a 13 year high, the prices of essential food commodities have also risen. In a city like Belgaum where going out to eat in hotels is very common the prices of dishes have increased alarmingly.

Take regular dishes like Idli, which used to cost you Rs.11 is now costing Rs.13 –15. Dosa, which was Rs.22, is now Rs.25. Uppit, pohe of Rs.6 are now Rs.10.

Where do you want the Vidhan Soudha? Poll

A poll(offline and online) is being conducted by Mr. Rajeev Topannavar.

The results will be submitted to the CM, Yedurappa and then he would take a decision on the site of the Vidhan Soudha in Belgaum.

The poll is on a different website and the results are not visible to all. I will make it a point to get the results as and when they compile the same.

Karnataka Budget 2008-09 What Belgaum Gets

I have tried to include all the Allocations made for Belgaum only.

Traffic & Transportation Policies and Strategies

Executive Summary of a Wilbur Smith study on Traffic & Transportation Policies and Strategies in Urban Areas in India is now available on the website of Ministry of Urban Development. The 20 page summary document makes a good reading.

Praja members would love the language, especially the terms like "slow moving vehicle index", "on-street parking interference index". Essentially, they have quantified stuff like "entropy", "edge friction", "turbulence" and "viscosity" that we often borrow and use here at Praja from thermo and fluid dynamics. Some equations for example:

HAL: invest before re-opening?

Just for a moment, forget those debates around whether HAL should re-open or not. Lets say a re-opening is coming (via court order, govt forcing its will, or whatever). Then, in the Praja spirit of positivity and high expectations(!), what would be the best ways of re-opening and operating this airport?
