CBI - Sanjaynagar junction magic boxes

The CBI junction magic box work has started. But from what I can make out, there is only one box that would come up at CBI junction. Most likely, that would be the case for SJN junction. Given that, traffic flow would most likely be as in the figure. Please note that road widens after SJN towards CBI.

Elevated Corridors - green light

Source Deccan Herald, CM Gets Cracking on City's Woes: "Yeddyurappa showed the green signal to BBMP to take up two elevated corridor projects: the 16-km North-South corridor connecting Hebbal to Madivala through Minsk Square and Vellara junction and the 12-km Bangalore East corridor connecting Kodihalli and Kundalahalli through Vellara junction..."

'People for a cause' - banners on IRR

Saw some folks on Sunday putting up posters and banners around Innter Ring Road spreading awareness about traffic rules. They were being well supported by the traffic cops. Inspiring indeed, and newspapers tell us that its a group of techies called PFC (People For a Cause). Good show guys!

Snippet from DH June 15:

Reclaiming footpaths

The right of the pedestrian to use the pavements unhindered is sacrosanct which has been repeatedly echoed even by the highest court of the land. But lower courts grant stay orders whenever attempts are made (though half heartedly) to remove the footpath hawkers. These stay orders go unchallenged effectively.

Decongesting CBD

As we see in other cities across the world, the Central Business District is always the most congested area. Hence many schemes have been introduced such as Congestion Tax, Pay and Park/Ride..etc

Harnessing the Desert Sun

A tiny fraction of the sun's energy that shines upon the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East could meet all of Europe 's electricity demands. The technology to harness the energy already exists.

Likewise, entire Karnataka's energy needs can be met by a similar plant at Gulbarga or Raichur, or one in Rajasthan through a consortium involving other states.

Auto's - good, bad, or ugly?

Auto's, by virtue of their easy maneuverability, are easily the biggest menace on the city roads, and the cause of all the chaos on them. Their de-merits as a public transport vehicle far out-weigh their merits.

Mail exchanges (between 10th June and today) in a Yahoogroup.

Bellary Road Elevated Concerns

Krishnaprasad of the hindu reports that DMRCL, which is involved with the high speed rail to BIA, has raised objections to plans for an elevated road corridor between minsk square and hebbal. Apart from this, Govt authorities are also concerned that HSR will eat into road widening efforts that will create a six lane corridor between mekhri circle and hebbal.

Byelaws, parking, traffic congestion etc etc

Marathahalli building 1

How hard is it to make a post like this? Examples abound. Here is another one from Marathahalli. A new tall building popped up earlier this year, and a Shanthi Sagar showed up, I am guessing as a tenant.

Of course, the parking has been planned for. Its in the basement. Spot the basement there, just to the left of stairs?

Peripheral Ring Road is back with BDA

http://www.bdabangalore.org/pprnew.htmThe Peripheral Ring Road is back. Not much new as far as the specs are concerned, but the big changes are, one, BDA (state govt) will be executing it, not NHAI (central govt) and two, it will be a PPP project.

There were several reports across papers today (ET, Biz-standard) and here is a summary:

BIAL - The Absence of Design Feature/s

BIAL has been negatively criticized as "Shopping Mall", "Factory-Shed" or "Warehouse" from many quarters.

The leading airports across the world such as Changi-Singapore, Lantau or Kaitak-Hongkong, Schipol-Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Heathrow-London, Dubai & the newer Swarnabhumi-Bangkok all include some design feature/s that leave a lasting impression on users.

Finland's pride - our future model?

The Finnish parliament voted to build OL3 (Nuclear plant) in 2002, in a decision seen as revolutionary in a Europe that had built no new nuclear plants since the 1986 Chernobyl accident and where opposition to nuclear power has traditionally been fierce.

Primary education - all well?

What was your experience like when you ran around to get your 3-4 year old admitted into pre-school or nursery? Leaving out those who could afford to pay and get into the 'top end' primary schools (money was the clear filter there), did the rest have good visibility into the criteria used to accept or reject their children? How many of you got real receipts for the entry/admission fee you paid? And if you hedged between 2-3 schools, and got admission into all, did you get your fees or deposits refunded in full?

Can we hope for safer roads

Not sure if people saw this today ("send drunk drivers ...") in the TOI. Here is another link (newstodaynet).

"Finally, there is a serious effort to discipline our traffic. The Law Commission has prepared a report on traffic discipline that sets down stringent penalties and exacting norms to straighten out India's notoriously indisciplined roads.
