The need for mobility and transportation arises because people and goods need to move from one place to another. We move because we need to go to places of employment, education, shopping, recreation, healthcare etc. Mobility requirements of citizens depend upon the choices the city provides them. If you had the option, wouldn't you live closer to work? If you could shop for all your needs in your neighborhood, would you still take that long trip to distant stores?

Adding more and more capacity to transportation systems is like stitching bigger clothes to deal with obesity. Thoughtful distribution of residential, commercial and business districts, well-planned transportation corridors laid according to the existing population patterns of the city, planning future layouts to evenly shape the living and commuting patterns of suburban areas – urban planning is the tool that can control transport needs and create sustainable and manageable demand for transportation.

Besides the above, planning layouts that are friendly to non-motorized modes of transport with adequate space for amenities like transit points and parking also helps manage transportation needs of neighbourhoods.

This session brings together urban planning experts and knowledgeable citizens for a constructive discussion on how urban planning decisions impact sustainable mobility. Attend this session to understand this very important aspect of sustainable mobility.

The coordinator for this session is Sanjay Vijayaraghavan.
