Killing our lakes - Varthur Lake as well?

No new post this, just a rehash of  year old "Eating up Varthur Lake". Inspired by Rithesh's recent note on Hebbal/Nagavara Lake, I wanted to remind us about possible encorachments on the area/stream between Varthur and Belandur lakes.

Was there selective cleansing of Bangalore electoral roles?

That's in effect what Justice M F Saldanha (Retd), Chairman – Karnataka Chapter, Trnasparency International India, is alleging. His letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, Karnataka, is reproduced below:

Easy auto being relaunched

Easy auto, an autorickshaw initiative launched couple of years ago and in spite of very good intentions, failed to gain a critical mass and momentum to sustain the service.

Killing our lakes - Hebbal/Nagavara Lake example

See the image below - it shows the Hebbala and Nagavara lakes. I am told by the locals that the area covered in the red boundary once formed an elaborate and huge lake system. The system first got divided by the Bellary road and the region right to the road subsequently dried out. This region was taken over by the UAS and they used it for rice/paddy crop experiments.

Meeting with Commercial Street (CSt) Merchants Association

The meeting with Mr. Shyam Melwani and Mr. Nazim Sait the President and Vice presidents of the association respectively, took place at their board room situated at the Dispensary Road.

Bangalore, and water - urgency?

Building up on their last report, Jayshree Nandi (with S Kushala) had yet another report in TOI yesterday to highlight Bangalore's water woes.

Voters' apathy? Rubbish!!!

There is much talk about the urban middle class’s apathy and how they intentionally stayed away from the polling booths despite initiatives like Lead India and Jaago Re. But, actually, problem isn’t voters’ apathy - it's the flawed electoral system.

A dangerous Strain of corruption

Peenya in Bangalore is a renowned Industrial area of the IT city. Being an Industrial area processing of polluting Industrial wastes is a crucial issue. There are set standards for classifying any industry’s pollution factor in three zones A, B, C etc, in decreasing order of polution.

BMTC Survey Questions (Draft) for review !

Prajagale,

In coming days we would be doing a online survey to get reasons for people using or not using the BMTC bus service, in particular Volvo/BIG-10/KS. Here is the list of questions that forms the survey:

Petition to CM to end BMTC/KSRTC monopoly

The bus is now beginning to re-establish its position as the primary mode for public transport. And, of course, the importance of public transport is a now a no-brainer. Given this scenario, government monopolies (BMTC & KSRTC) occupying this critical space is an anomaly that cannot be suffered any longer.

Revised Kendra Sarige / HOHO routes

After a poor response from the public to the initial Kendra Sarige services, the BMTC has revised the routes. The highlight of the new route is, it connects the 3 main BMTC hubs (TTMCs) - KempeGowda Bus Stand (Majestic), Shantinagar Bus Stand and Shivajinagar Bus Stand.

At last realization has dawn on BMTC for rationalization of its routes!

At last, a better sense and realization has dawned on BMTC to start thinking of rationalizing its routes and aligning it with the Metro network. In any problem-fixing situation, the realization and accepting that there is a problem that exist itself is a half the battle. Now the BMTC needs to fight the other half of the battle of planning and executing the plan for route rationalization.

Alternative to Tree 'Cutting'

We see a lot of discussion these days about this tree 'choping' business. If us, and our beloved civic agencies are really that concerned about them, why can't we look at the alternatives. How about 'moving / relocating' them instead?
