Land Swap to Help Boost Capacity of City Railway Station
The Bangalore City Railway Station will be able to house more trains and platforms as expansion work will begin on about 3.3 acres of land given to South Western Railway by the BBMP as part of a land swap. The land is part of 16 acres on which the Binny Mills once stood.
Information about the expansion work was provided by Union Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge while he was visiting the Rail Wheel Factory at Yelahanka on Monday. Kharge said the expanded premises would help accommodate trains that were currently being halted elsewhere. The station would also get new platforms that would increase its capacity by over 50 per cent.
Kharge also asked officials to augment capacity at the Yelahanka railway station in order to make it capable of housing more trains. “There is a plan to develop four to five platforms at Yelahanka at a cost of `18-20 crore. The station is currently chockfull,” he said. He also announced plans for a maintenance and storage depot at the Banaswadi railway station for electric multiple unit (EMU) trains going towards Chennai on an electric line. The supplementary budget presented by Kharge also included plans for converting the Byappanahalli station into a terminal and a junction in order to relieve pressure off the crowded City and Yeshwantpur stations.

So much developments happening at
1. Bangalore city station expansion with Rs 20 Crore & 3.3 Acer Land
2. Pit lines are made operational Byappanahalli Yard & Station expansion
3. MEMU maintenance shed at Banaswadi,
4. Yelahanka station getting terminal capacity
SWR should revamp the Bangalore city station instead of doing incremental works. It may need funds of One METRO station Rs 100 Crore.
Will our Bangalore MP's, Railway Minister Kharge take this bold step and push for revamping Bangalore city station with Suburban Rail Project ???
Clear suburban rail service for B'lore, Kumar tells Centre
Bangalore: BJP General Secretary and Lok Sabha member Ananth Kumar on Friday asked the Union Government to clear Karnataka government's proposal for implementing suburban rail service project for Bangalore.
Expressing surprise over a reported statement of Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge on the "lack of a concrete" proposal from the state government on the project, Kumar said the previous (BJP) government had "relentlessly" pursued the issue with the Centre.
In a letter to Kharge, Kumar, Bangalore South MP, noted that Karnataka was the first state to take steps for speedy implementation of railway projects by contributing 50 per cent of the cost.
Pointing out that Rs 1,021 crore had been released for the railway projects as the state's share, he requested the Ministry of Railways to participate and collaborate with Karnataka government in the successful implementation of the suburban rail service project.
Kumar said Bangalore attracts lakhs of people from all over the country apart from which citizens commute on a daily basis between different corners in Bangalore and therefore it was but necessary to introduce suburban rail system on the lines of the existing service in Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Kolkata.

Suburban Railway : Bangalore South MP letter to Railway Minister
Ananth Kumar refutes Kharge’s statement on suburban rail plan
Expressing surprise over Railway Minister M. Mallikarjun Kharge’s statement that the Railway Ministry had not received a concrete proposal from the Karnataka government regarding suburban rail service for Bangalore, Bangalore South MP Ananth Kumar claimed that the former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar had written to the former Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal about the proposed project at an estimated cost of Rs. 8,759 crore in February 2013 after initiating a feasibility and study report.
In a letter to Mr. Kharge, a copy of which was released to the media, Mr. Ananth Kumar said the Chief Secretary, Government of Karnataka, had written to the Railway Board on October 28, 2013, requesting implementation of the project.
“In his letter, the Chief Secretary had communicated that all the necessary actions had been initiated by the State government for the implementation of the suburban rail system in Bangalore. This includes a detailed project report for the first phase of the project, setting up of a special purpose vehicle ‘Bangalore Suburban Rail Company Ltd.’ and the initiation of action for acquisition of Binny Mill Land at Bangalore,” said Mr. Ananth Kumar, who is also the national general secretary of the BJP.
He pointed out that that a suburban rail system on the lines of the service in Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Kolkata should be introduced in Bangalore to help the growing population and address the mobility issues to destinations like Tumkur, Doddaballapur, Chickballapur and Mandya. He has urged the Centre to clear the proposal put forth by the Karnataka government in the regard.

When Railway Minister is doing so many good works for Bangalore, why is he hesitating p to approve this for Capital of Karnataka ???
Banswadi MEMU Maint shed funds allocation in coming Railway Budg
Banswadi - Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit inspection & stabling facilities- South Western Railway- MEMU rake put into service in 2006 over South Western Railway electrified territory is being extended by putting addtional MEMU rakes. Further, electrification in Bengaluru area is going at
brisk pace due to various projects being undertaken. New sections under electrification on Bengaluru - Mysore, Yelahanka - Dodballapur - Hindupur, Yesvantpur - Chik Banavar areas in and around Bengaluru will become most eligible for suburban MEMU services. Already existing rakes have
earned high patronage and the above sections, once electrified, are also expected to attract larger segment of commuters on the similar traffic growth pattern evolved in other metro cities. It is, therefore, proposed to take up this work at an estimated cost of Rs. 11,00 lakh with an outlay of Rs. 1
lakh during 2013-14. A token supplementary grant of Rs. 0.01 lakh is being sought to start this work immediately and the balance amount of Rs. 0.99 lakh will be found by reappropriation within the grant.
http://www.indianrailways.gov.in/rai...ry_Dec2013.pdf
Thanks to Railway Minister Kharge for these sanctions. Now funds need to be allocated to complete these projects with just token on Rs 1 Lakhs will not progress. On the 12 th Feb'2014 budget, complete funds should be allocated and few more MEMU rakes should be allocated for Bangalore division.
RPC Layout Halt station complimenting Commuter Rail
SWR unknowingly doing work for Commuter Rail / Suburban Rail
Look at the past one year, things which went for complimenting Commuter Rail Bangalore :
1. Bangalore - Nelamangala train started ( even though its odd time )
2. Bangalore - Tumkur trains started for office travellers
3. Bangalore - Marikuppam MEMU started
4. MEMU Maintenance shed work taken up at the cost of Rs 15 crore
5. RPC Layout halt station operational
6. City Railway station expansion with 3 Acres of Binny Mill Land and Rs 70 Crore funds allocation
7. FOB at Baiyyappanahalli station & integration with METRO station and Whitefiled FOB will be opening shortly
8. Doubling of Yesvantpur - Yelahanka and Yelahanka - Channasandra due in Dec'2014
9. Electrification of Yelahanka - Guntakal line tragetted by Dec'2014
10. Kengeri - Rmanagar Electrification inspection waiting and MEMU train to run once clearnace obtained.
make noise for peanuts?
Sure these are some positives..but do you think its counter productive in some ways?
As we know there is no political will at all for commuter rail for blr and SWR is kind of throwing biscuits with these short projects and will surely list this all when talk of commuter rail comes up again..
The questions is if all these moves are in real earnest or otherwise!
MEMU Shed is major step for Commuter rail
As Srinidhi mentioned, Political will is missing and some of them are small things, but in the absence of political will and SWR reluctance, these things will long way.
Binny Mill land 3.3 Acres handig over to SWR and allocaition of 70 Crore for the expansio of pit lines and MEMU shed at Banaswadi are major steps towards Commuter Rail inlcuding Electrification of Mysore line and Guntakal line.
With this SWR should be able to deploy MEMU's in three directions : Mysore, Banagrapet, Dodballapur.
MEMU Shed near Hejjala
RITES survey suggested a MEMU shed near Hejjala on the Mysore route. Don't know when this will be implemented.

RUB in lieu of LC No.4 RPC layout

Sell the idea of Commuter to Mandya and Chikkballapur MPs
It is important to sell the idea of CRS to the MPs of Chikkballapur, Mandya, Bangalore Rural along with the MPs of Bangalore City.
The city as such encompasses five MP Constituencies including Chikkballapur and Bangalore Rural. Yelahanka and Devenhalli International Aiport are part of Chikkballapur Constituency whereas RR Nagar, Vasanathpura and a few other wards are part of Bangalore rural.
Chennai 83 years of electric suburban rail
Electrical trains between Beach and Tambaram began in 1931
This April, the city’s suburban railways, as we know it, turns 83.
On April 2, 1931, the first electrically-operated railway service between Madras Beach and Tambaram was launched by Sir George Fredrick Stanley, the then governor of Madras.
The newly-inaugurated rail road happened to be the earliest metre gauge to be electrified in the country. It was only a month after the official inauguration that the service was opened to the public on May 11, 1931.
The plan to electrify railway lines in Madras however was not new. Sir Percy Rothera, an agent of the South Indian Railways, had foreseen the need for such a service way back in 1923.
With the city expanding, largely agricultural areas such as Saidapet, St. Thomas Mount and Tambaram were fast developing into residential quarters. It was only by 1931 that Rothera’s proposal saw the light of day.
As part of the suburban remodelling initiative of South Indian Railways, an ambitious plan was announced.
A new line between Beach and Egmore, and two between Egmore and Tambaram, were proposed to be built.
The Madras Electricity Supply Corporation which powered the railway lines was aided by sub-stations in Egmore and Meenambakkam.
The city which, until then, had the single steam rail line between Harbour and Tambaram, used by both passenger and goods trains, was soon to have more options.
The number of trains shuttling passengers was increased to 45 a day, running every 10 minutes at peak hours, and every 30 minutes, otherwise.
The running time between Madras Beach and Tambaram, which previously took 2 hours, was now covered in merely 49 minutes.
Moreover, commuters could avail of the train service from 4 in the morning right up to 12 at night.
On December 27, 1930, the authorities received their first consignment of 25 electric carriages from England. Painted a dull green with a black wheel base, the new carriages were parked in Tambaram station.
Boasting of wide sliding doors, a well-designed seating arrangement, and thick glass fronts, the new trains promised comfortable travel.
The governor, at the opening ceremony, is reported to have said that the new service would transform ‘desolate south Madras into burgeoning garden cities’.

response received from Railways
Earlier in the week, I received this response dt 3rd March (to my letter of 31st Jan) from Director/ Works Plg, Railway Board. Well, there's some movement, and with all MP candidates promising working towards making it happen, hopefully, we should see it in operation soon.
Good to see Railway Board responding to Citizens forum
SWR Hubli need to send their positive coments for this which is pending with them since 3 months.
After elections, we need ensure elected MPs push this one on priority.

Earlier these ROB / RUB cost was very less, as construction cost has gone up, now ROB / RUB's will cost more for BBMP and Railways in Bangalore.
But GOK is happy to spend more money in Constructing Flyovers and underpasses, but does not have time by either Chief Minister / Chief Secretary / IDD Secretary / DULT to sit with Railway Board to get the required approval by Railway Minister / Railway Board on Bangalore Suburban Rail / Commuter Rail.
So one more study on Bangalore Suburban Rail.

Vijayanagara Halt to Malur
If they can't run from Nayandahalli, can't the services be started from Vijayanagara Halt station to Malur. It would help the people going upto ITPL and further.
Electric Train to Mysore - Will it not happen due to BESCOM-SWR
With this ping-pong between Bescom and SWR, will Mysuru not see Electric Train in 2016?
No electric lines for the complete distance
There are no electric lines for the complete distance between Mysuru and Bengaluru. Hence, running electric train is still a distant dream. We would be lucky to see completion of track doubling and starting of regular trains between the 2 cities -- if that happens in our lifetime.

Few takers for train ticket-vending machines
Technical snarls and the absence of designated staff to guide passengers on how to use the smart card-operated Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs) at the Bengaluru City railway station have resulted in long queues in front of unreserved ticket counters.
Source: http://www.deccanherald.com/content/517533/few-takers-train-ticket-vending.html
To use the ATVMs, a passenger should know HINDI/ENGLISH. There are no kannada options in the ATVMs. I could see only the heading showing in kannada that too with broken words. Looks like the railways do not want local passengers to use this machine.
Language in Ticket Vending Machine -- Unrelated to above topic
Even though the above post is unrelated to the topic being discussed under this thread, it is a serious subject.
Central Govt institutions in general and Railways in particular doesn't give due prominence to local language. It has to include local language in all its communication in Karnataka and for the past 3-4 years, there is no trace of Kannada even in the railway tickets issued. I don't understand how people knowing only local language can even understand where they are heading towards by looking at the ticket or at the least be assured they are not being fooled by being issued ticket of some other destination.

Their mandate is to promote Hindi rather than running trains!
Some time it looks like IR's existence is to promote Hindi and not to run trains! https://en.wikipedia.org/... says only 42% speaks Hindi while only 25% declare it as their native language. Agree that 68 years of promotion has had some effect on the numbers but we simply forget the fact that 58% of the population can not read/comprehend what these government departments are upto! At this age of ICT, it is not difficult to use multi lingual forms and documents as per the local need or even language neutral sign languages @ stations for giving instructions. But when we have people at the helm of affairs thinking that they can teach the remaining 58% a lesson or two in HIndi, what can people do?
Ramesh.
56 crore for the proposed 2nd MEMU car shed at Gaya.
Bangalore is getting Raw deal from Railways and Govt of India. Even the MPs representing from Bangalore have failed to get the project thru and looks like they do not have time to even review the central govt funding for Bnagalore excpet they come for Flagging off ceromony.
Case of MEMU shed at Gaya at the cost of Rs 56 Crore and this is 2nd MEMU shed at Gaya. Bangalore still waiting for 1st MEMU shed to be opened :
MEMU car shed at Gaya approved
The Railway Board has sanctioned two major railway projects for East Central Railway (ECR) in 2016-2017. They include construction of a modern MEMU (multiple electric modified unit) car shed at Gaya and facility for POH (periodical overhauling) of goods train wagons at Samastipur.
The Board has directed the ECR to work on these two projects on a priority basis to further streamline smooth running of passenger and goods trains in the zone.
According to a Board official, the railways has allocated Rs 56 crore for the proposed MEMU car shed at Gaya. "Keeping in view the increase in the number of MEMU rakes, the railways has decided to set up a new MEMU car shed at Gaya so that MEMU rakes could be properly maintained from fitness point of view," he said, adding the first MEMU car shed under the ECR was earlier set up at Jhajha under the Danapur division.
According to sources, the railways is running more MEMU trains on different sections of Danapur, Mughalsarai and Dhanbad divisions, replacing old conventional passenger rakes. A car shed is a must for physical maintenance of MEMU rakes, which are being hauled by electric locomotives. "Thus, the Board has approved the ECR proposal to sanction one more car shed for MEMU rakes in the zone," a source said.
