Karnataka - Rooftop Solar systems for retail usage

This book will hold together interesting posts or wiki pages to share information and personal experiences on rooftop solar systems. The basics are in place, a government organization called Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited (KREDL) is already in place. It has funds to promote usage of, amongst other things, Solar Energy.

Solar power - rooftop, grid-connect, community grid, 3 diff things

Power

Sanjay and IDS are already at it on another post (Solar - connected to Grid). Sorry guys, keep it on there, but I thought a primer on slightly varying type of talks on the subject may help. There seems to be a need for incentives, policy push and awareness on these three types of scenarios.

Right to Services aka Sakala - live from April!

Governance

So Right to Services, or timebound delivery of services to citizens goes live in state of Karnataka from Monday, April 2.  What services are we guaranteed to get? Well, go to this website, go to "Services", pick your department to see what services are "in scope" (http://sakala.kar.nic.in). I went there, clicked on BBMP, here is the list:

How far can Rs.2/- take you?

Public Transport

How far can Rs.2/- go?

In these days is Rs. Two worth anything?

If you want to get into a BMTC bus and get down at the next stop it costs Rs.4.

A cup of coffee or tea costs anything above Rs.8.

Auto fare is min. Rs. 20 and Metro Rs.10.

Kerbstone painting to enforce roadside parking?

EnforcementTraffic

Every drop of paint used on or around the road should have some purpose, should communicate something to the road users. If you look at the kerbstones, you would find a lot of paint wasted in creating the black/white or black/yellow stripes. As far as I know, the black/yellow or black/white paint patterns don't communicate anything to road users or drivers.

TrafficTraffic jams

Some good work being done here proactively by citizens of Malleshwaram around the new mall thats coming up in the area...

Some preliminary problems that we saw at Orion mall:

Kannur-Bangalore super metro rail

Metro Rail

Constructing about 200 k.ms overhead railway line from Kannapuram straightly to  Banglore would be an ever profitable expansion of Railway traffic and a great boon.

Bangalore Water Supply in Summer

Water

Came across this piece trying to get some info on rainwater harvesting ideas.By ZenRainMan on the Rainwater Blog - Bangalore - the water in summer

Some good advise. Makes a lot of sense. But how long will it be before our actions start making sense too?

The way out for Indian Railways?

Public Transport

Its (Indian Railways) size, and the advantages it enjoys as a monopoly, put it in a class of its own. It’s the world’s fourth largest network (in kilometres) after the US, Russia and China. It’s the envy of others, in terms of passengers and freight carried. But it is run, unlike IOC, ONGC etc, as a departmental activity.

Open letter to Akhilesh Yadav

Economy

Dear Akhilesh Yadav

There are three key infrastructural areas where Bangalore has failed - power supply, water supply, & public bus transport services. And, the solutions to all of them are simple - they are detailed in the blogs linked below:
