No phone in car - two predictions

Click on this ad Karnataka government put out in newspapers on Monday. The message is pretty loud and stern - if they find a phone on inside your car or two wheeler, your driving license will get canceled.

Well, I like the idea, and I was thinking that the folks who gain most are FM radio operators. Imagine being stuck in Bangalore traffic - it being such a real thing, you don’t have to imagine anything here - for hours together, and you can’t use your phone, not even with a hands-free set. Won't FM radio would be your only friend, unless you get the time to replace music CDs in the car every morning :)

Who loses most here? Not the hands-free equipment makers, but people who spend their hour long commute time doing office work on phone. They have got to cope up with two hours of solid downtime everyday now. I am sure their bosses would notice that. Think like me, and predict that a bunch of companies would lobby hard to get the law altered to allow use of hands-free sets.

Think more, and try to agree with me on another subtle point. Mobile phones have been a key reason so many drivers have been patient with pathetic traffic conditions in our city. Now - eee…yes now - they will be forced to notice the mess and raise their voices to do something about it. So I would not be surprised to hear of more protests and what-not about traffic conditions in Bangalore and elsewhere.

So there, my two predictions. The pre-condition of course is that this blanket ban on phones should be enforced well. Whether that will happen or not is another story.

... and noticed that the states/governments are usually okay with allowing hands-free use of mobile phones. Of course, mine is a four wheeler centric view here. I have never done a two-wheeler with hands-free on (never with a hand-phone too for that matter). But it must be a lot more distracting for two wheelers than car drivers.

I saw a Volvo citybus driver talking on his cell for some 5 minutes non-stop while continuing to drive. Should I report and if so to whom? City Zen

The third point says, "Keeping a mobile phone switched on while driving...". Even if sounds silly, while who's driving? I have a driver and that would obviously mean I can continue to speak on the phone while the back seat, right? Just wondering...you never know, they may introduce a blanket mobile phone ban on all automobiles :-)

No phone in car -- whistleblowers

"...... this blanket ban on phones should be enforced well. Whether that will happen or not is another story." Encourage whistleblowing cityzens to call up police call centers furnishing the car number, location, and time. If the errant driver is penalized, let the whistleblowers get a cut - to encourage whistleblowing. -- City Zen

Why not extend this funda ...

... and encourage 'whistelblowing' for high-speeders and red light jumpers as well. I am so amazed by the fact that police puts cell phone ban at higher priority than speeding, red light jumping and wrong-side driving. If they have the might for enforcing things, those three offences kill and damage a lot more phones, at least based on my experiences.

evidentiary problem?

i think it has got to do with provability. if i charge that this guy was using a fone at this time, then perhaps they can find out if indeed there was a call made at that time. though i have no clue what will prevent somebody from claiming but milard my dodappan magaLu was using the fone milard.

Let's encourage whistleblowing

As Silk says, the carphone is a petty crime, but as he rightly said, let's extend the funda to all traffic violations. TS has a valid point - provability. Methinks mere summons to the station and letting off with a nice sermon might to some extent act as a deterrent. If lucky, the driver might also confess. x I feel whistleblowing in all spheres of our public citylife should be encouraged. I-Tax dept. has a provision for some 20% reward. The fact is many IT-officials themselves are unaware. Whistleblowing could be promoted after suitable guidelines about protecting the whistleblower, etc. are framed. City Zen
