Going over Cauvery Junction Underpass

Back-of-the-envelope analysis and some rough sketches to understand the cauvery junction underpass solution. Looks like the palike will need more than the magic of precast boxes to make this work.

Parking on ORR Marathahalli - thats the way!

Went to Hometown in Marathahalli recently and was pleasantly surprised to see a few things. A tow-truck was removing vehicles parked on Outer Ring Road and service road next to Innovative and Hometown. I also saw traffic cops handing out fines to those who were busy parking under no-parking boards while the tow-truck was doing its job!

Well, BBMP, Traffic Police or whoever is organizing this, good show and thats the way. The only way to deal with careless parking and irresponsible businesses who don't care to provide adequate parking space is to enforce, fine and tow! Once the customers figure its a risk and hassle to visit a particular commercial area, they will stop visiting. That will make shops and businesses fall in line. Simple.

Better Bussing For A Green Bangalore

There's no denying that the tree cover in Bangalore is being lost largely due to road widening. Road widening is necessitated due to unchecked growth and usage of private vehicles. To address this problem, you have to have excellent public transport services. METRO may be a solution. But, it is extremely expensive, and at best a solution in the long-term. BMTC cannot cope up with the needs, however much they may appear to have become efficient, which they are not and cannot be, as long as they continue to enjoy a monopoly status. The simple answer is to facilitate the entry of TVS kind of companies (my first exposure to TVS was as a bus service provider in the city of Madurai) into the fray. The present rules do not provide for that. It facilitates only the 'Sharma' kind of operations, which in turn only helps provide fodder for the die-hard opponents of the private sector.

Bengalooru - Nelamangala Tollway on NH4

Saw two interesting bits in papers about this project. About a week ago, newspapers carried a list of land properties along NH4/Tumkur road that could be acquired for the project. And today, one newspaper has an ad insert that says - "Navayuga Engineering Co. Ltd.

Pre-paid auto service at Bangalore City station

I have been travelling to Madras and back by train quite often over the past few months and have had the opportunity to sample the pre-paid auto service about 5 times. The sample size might be a bit too small to make any conclusive statements, but here goes... All my arrivals into the city have been around 5:00 a.m. by either the Bangalore Mail or the Kaveri express. Invariably there are taxi drivers and auto drivers who greet you at the exit. Invariably I refuse.

BMRC's Response to RTI Letter

Hi All ! BMRC has responded to my RTI queries(See comment below). It is clear that they have squarely made the Urban development dept in-charge of the more serious issues raised in the letter. As they have stated, suggestions made in the CTTP will be followed, subject to govt's approval. Metro Phase-2 is planned from Whitefield to Indiranagar & EC to Yelahanka.

Metro @ Jayanagar - how exactly will it look?

Any ideas on how exactly will Metro look at this beautiful Jayanagar road? What is the precise location and design of upcoming terminal on Nanda Talkies road?

Why People Do Not Like to Use BMTC?

Most of the people do not like to use BMTC and want to use private vehicle - Why so? Those who are using BMTC are all forced to use it since they do not have vehicles or cannot afford fuel for it and use it occassionally.

Coastal Karnataka and Tourism

I have done the "Bangalore - Hassan - Mangalore - Udupi - Kundapur - Bhatkal - Murudeshwar - Jog Falls - Sagar and back" round trip a couple of times in past, and will have some images of Hilly and Coastal Karnataka etched in my mind forever.

So I thought of visiting the region again for the end of December vacations. Called up a few travel agents, checked a few travel websites to look for places to stay. Asked around friends to check if its practical to do a pure road-trip and explore the coast for a week.
