Bangalore Elevated Roads

A swiss challenge by a consortium of dilli-based IDEB Inc and Shanghai Urban Construction Group, proposes three elevated 2x2 corridors: misnk square to hebbal, kodihalli to kundlahalli gate and vellara jn to silkboard. This ofcourse, is pending government approval.

Road widening doesnt always help!

There was this article on the web about research done on traffic congestion. It opens up a new perspective about transport.. "..more road capacity will not by itself substantially reduce congestion. Urbanist Anthony Downs once famously stated that travel demand on freeways rises to meet capacity. If new lanes are added, congestion problems might be lessened in the short run. But that reduced congestion will attract drivers who previously used other routes, traveled at different times of the day, used other modes, or drove less or not at all. New roads and lanes do provide additional mobility and other transportation benefits, but increased road capacity provides less congestion relief than one might expect. "

Should BIAL be subject to RTI?

Retaining HAL airport

Its a last chance to put our weight behind this issue. In view of the urgency of the matter, the Governor should bring the two parties to the agreement — Civil aviation ministry and BIAL — across the table for resolving the issue or, failing which, seek Central intervention to find a way out. The civil aviation ministry itself doesn’t seem to attach much sanctity to its policy of not allowing two international airports within 150 km. Recently it cleared a proposal to establish an airport at Noida near Delhi and Kannur in Kerala. There are number industry leaders voicing concern, but they need a co-ordinated effort & even citizens need to pressurize the government to act on public opinion. Various schemes like giving equity in HAl airport to BIAL & domestic flights during peak hours are being debated privately. So how do we convince the reluctant BIAL to agree on public interest?

vote our man to Lead India

An analysis of the public voting (through SMS) pattern, after each of the rounds, shows that whereas the competitor (Mr Nanavati from Ahmedabad) has always had over 80% support from his home state, our very own Mr R K Misra has had consistently less than 50% support from his home state. As such, folks, if there's one factor that's working against our man, it's the apathy of his own people.

BIAL tidbits - possible ATC delay, user fee, first flight etc.

Delay in ATC equipment? - [Disclaimer first - I learnt this back on Jan 13, and is second hand info] Someone who visited BIAL mentioned that there may be a delay in installing air traffic control equipment. BIAL asked HAL for help (to use their ATC equipment I assume, don't understand this stuff well), but apparently they can't. So BIAL may be settling for help from nearby Yelahanka airport in case ATC equipment isn't ready in time.

First flight - Its all set though, and 12:05 am Indian Airlines flight to Singapore would be the first one out of BIAL on March 30!

Pay more to use BIAL? - Hope you guys have been following news reports about BIAL asking for a "user development fee". Rs 675 for domestic and 955  international for each departing passenger, source here.
