How is 18% for majority!?

After casting my vote early in the morning yesterday, while I drove around and was doing some shopping, I was curiously trying to spot the ink on those index fingers. My empirical observations told me that less than 50% of people had taken the trouble of visiting a polling booth. Morning newspapers are saying that Bangalore city areas saw only 44% voter turnout, and I am not surprised.

With three cornered (four, if you add BSP) contests everywhere, it is safe to assume that winning candidate will at best get 35-40% of the votes polled. 40% (winning percentage) of 44% (voting percentage) = around 18%. So, the winning candidates can realistically claim to have support of only 18% of Bangalore's citizens.

No appreciation of 74th amendment

Considering that this was the Assembly election, I had listed what I had called as 'manifesto points' (see this blog of mine) and forwarded them to many NGO's and RWA's for inclusion in their respective lists. The article linked here on CitizenMatters also brings this out clearly. However, this whole election has willy-nilly become more 'Vote Bengaluru' than 'Vote Karnataka'.

30% Reservation for Kannadigas in IT jobs - What do you say?

Resservation for Kannadigas in IT jobs is an agenda for the JDS party as well as KRV. In a recent discussion in CNN-IBN, Kannadigas expressed it should be whereas outsiders said it as a ridiculous agenda.

One person said that Kannadigas has to come upto the mark and get the job and the education level in Karnataka has to improve!!

Building plan submission and clearance - all online!?

Spotted a news clip in Pune newspaper (ToI) this week that said - PCMC (Pimpri Chinchwad, a Pune suburb) is planning to make sanctioning of building plans an online process. So:

"At present, builders are required to submit the papers and the necessary documents pertaining to building plans to the PCMC. The civic body has now developed a software to scrutinise the papers once they are submitted on-line ... The software will help in checking all aspects of the building plans and confirm whether they comply with the building bylaws, TDR and FSI restrictions, etc."

Mangalore Bangalore Train - Will it be canceled

[Warning - still no source or reference for this development. So treat it as discussion, not 'news' in any sense. Anyone has a reference or quote, please provide one here - {editor}]

Its really a shocking news that the train from Bangalore to Mangalore will stand canceled from First of June 2008 as per the decision taken by the Railway board saying that it is non profitable.

Does anyone know that since the beginning of the said 6517 & 6518 trains, there is a minimum of 300 waiting lists of passengers. Then how can you say that it is not a profitable route. In order to make the people tired of the journey the trains reach the destination 2 to 3 hours after time. With this they want to make the people commuting on the trains be less and prove the fact that the route is non profitable. But please dont feel that the people of Karnatka are silent spectators. They will be aggressive once their morale is hurt. Dont try to put hand in lions mouth and try to count its teeth.

Baby Steps: A Perspective on Voting

If you have ever observed a child in your family or friends’ circle grow up, it may sometimes seem ridiculous when everyone rejoices when he/she stands up for the first time and successfully puts one little foot in front of the other. Of course, this is usually followed by the little one immediately falling to the floor and crawling away. But are you discouraged? Do you think to yourself, “Wow, just one small step? She is never going to walk! How will she ever run?” Needless to say, most of us are aware that walking, let alone running, is a process – a skill that is developed one baby-step at a time.

Why not extend Namma Metro to BIAL ?

I have been reading at various forums and news papers and it is now clear that the planning authorities goofed up by not thinking about rail connectivity to the new BIAL. Now various suggestions are being made and one that is louder than the rest is that a dedicated rail link be provided from MG Road to the BIAL. Which in my opinion is utterly stupid and expensive.
