Accident nation

There was a report in today's TOI on accidents in India. 125,000 people lost their lives in India in road accidents. India tops the list in road deaths in the world. China has managed to bring DOWN road deaths from 2005 to 2006. In India this has gone up from about 106,000 to 125,000 from 2006 to 2007.

Entropy example: Kilometer long jam for no real reason

Marathahalli JamOne Wednesday afternoon, I noticed a kilometer long jam around a tiny intersection on Varthur Road at Marathahalli. The photo doesn't tell you much, but watch the video (below) and guess the reason for the chaos I captured:

Basavanagudi Traffic Regulation

Hi All,

Attached is the letter being sent to BBMP /Traffic Police (South) about streamlining traffic at Basavanagudi. I am also forwarding the map (copy updated) with some captioned pictures about traffic in the area.

The Real Price of Nano

The Real Price of Nano -

The government has reportedly offered huge tax sops of over Rs 30,000 crore (Rs 300 billion) to Tata Motors for the Nano car project, according to the State Support Agreement (SSA) signed between Tata Motors and the Gujarat government on October 7, which was leaked to the media.

Traffic Diversion and Flow During Construction of BRTS

Can somebody help in providing links or suggestions for Construction Management Techniques for concrete and type and traffic diversion for contruction of an elevated road on a major arterial road?

Tagore Circle Underpass – Moving Bottlenecks in Basavanagudi

KR Park 1BBMP’s prescription to ease congestion in Basavanagudi area is to install an underpass at Tagore circle – a strange decision, since a gigantic flyover has been built on a parallel road, & that same road (Vani Vilas Rd) can be streamlined for uninterrupted flows to attract more traffic, & limit traffic past Gandhi Bazaar & Tagore Circle.

As can be seen from the diagram, what this will do is invite even more traffic through  MN Krishnarao Rd (diagonal road), BP Wadia Rd as also on Gandhi Bazaar Rd . Soon, there will be a need for another underpass or flyover at Indian Institute of World Culture, followed up further by another at the DVG Rd–Gandhi Bazaar Rd intersection, & so on so forth !

I got challanned

While I do appreciate the recent drive by the traffic authorities at enforcing rules, their letting off the regular violators like the autos, BMTC buses, call centre vehicles, etc, and for much bigger offences, makes them susceptible to charges of partiality, or other forces at play. Do they want to do something about that?

Underpass at Tagore Circle - End of Gandhi Bazaar?

The pleasure of shopping on Gandhi Bazaar Main Road in Basavanagudi may be lost forever, if the underpass at Tagore Circle at the beginning of the road materializes. Yes, this proposal now seems to have moved and Deccan Herald has published traffic diversions to accommodate this project. I have put in all the pieces in a hurry. Sorry for any editing lapses.

Bus Priority Examples: Manchester Automatic Traffic Bollards

This is rather amusing but its a great example of ensuring bus priority - and though this stuff can be used on segregated bus lanes in Delhi and Pune, they may be best considered for implementing peripheral bus lanes with success.
