Bangalore's new Skywalk locations

InfrastructurePedestrian Infrastructure

BBMP has come out with an EOI document for construction of 56 Skywalks with escalators in 14 packages, here it is (link to pdf)

Some of the locations that stand out in terms of utility and usefulness are,

Station and the Airport

city station 1Imagine the noise if our new international airport had no escalators to take you up from check-in area to the departure hall? 'Super shoddy', 'oh these cheapos', coin-your-expletives, or 'like our station' right? Switch over to the City station, and remember how you lugged your stuff up the stairs from the platform to the footbridge and back down again.

We can hear you say - there are porters to help. Why does the airport not save some money by arranging for 50-60 porters? Before this gets into socialism vs capitalism like arguments, analyze this.

Govt of India on Infrastructure

Governance

Keep digging Government websites and you come across lots of interesting stuff. Wonder if we should build a search engine dedicated to sarkaari websites. Anyway, here is an interesting site: Committee on Infrastructure. This committee was setup:

HAL airport reopening - Connectivity and Access first, reopen later.

Public Transport

HAL Airport - from IRRIf powers that be are determined to reopen HAL airport for commercial operations, whether for full fledged operations or limited, connectivity and access issues must be fixed first. I am voting here for a "Connectivity and Access First, Airport Later" campaign. Here are some high level items that should get addressed before the airport resumes its commercial operations.

Connectivity:

Humanised streets - a Beijing initiative!

Environment

The Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development's initiation of a national car-free day on Sept. 22 is of significance to both the country's urban development and environmental protection.

The theme, "humanized street", points to the trend in city renovations, of city roads in particular, in recent years.

Positives:

The Cheap Volvo ride coincidence

Public Transport

The travel in the BMTC’s prestigious Volvo air-conditioned buses for just Re 1 from one point to another point in the city for four days is seen as a gesture by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government to celebrate its completion of 100 days in office. But not many people know that it was a gimmick. It is believed that the gesture was intended to benefit the participants of the three-day national executive meet of the ruling party in the State. The Re 1 travel did help many commuters, who find the rates otherwise unaffordable.

Do we need this?

Have you seen this one?

Apart from Volvo goody, here is something interesting and concerning.

A Rs 1,000-crore, 45-storey interchange terminal where BMTC, KSRTC and Namma Metro services would converge, would come up at the Majestic bus stand, the minister said and added that the construction work on it would begin shortly.

FM Cariappa Road

Ok, before we make suggestions, we need to be very explicit about what we understand about the road. Since, sri is the local malla complete with a high flung jeTTi and spread out rhetorical stance and all*, we start with what he said about this road. We keep in mind that beyond his generic description, which nevertheless gives us a feel for the road, we need explicit and detailed details. Srivatsa said:

BMTC's business-oriented outlook

BusPublic Transport

To compensate for the losses in the regular operations, BMTC is now having to look at newer and newer avenues, though in the process they may be deviating totally from their original mandate. The increased contract services for schools and IT sector companies, etc are a part of all that.
