Came across this article on the Bangalore Mirror today, talking about axing over 40,000 trees in the western ghats to just lay transmission lines to bring power to Bangalore:

This seems so short sighted. The short term benefits of plugging the power supply gap is minimal to the damage to the environment and loss of forest cover that this model requires.
We need the power no doubt. But there has to be other smarter ways to build these transmission lines: underground probably. Or alternate routes.
How can we force a discussion on this?
