Looking for inputs for a presentation on Hubli Dharwad CDP - ASAP

up

I have been asked to make a presentation which would be presented to high profile group meeting in Hubli (ABIDE like). The aim at the end of the day is to get improvements incorporated in the CDP (comprehensive development plan), which is under revision. Now this has come to me by chance, and though I have only passing familiarity to the place, I still want to make the most of the opportunity. Unfortunately, there is not much time, and the presentation needs to be ready by 24th Oct. So am opening this for inputs, and need them quickly (before 20th Oct).

There are two areas where you can contribute. One is general ideas/suggestions you have. Hubli-Dharwad is a tier II twin-city, around 1.1 million population, pretty flat terrain. It would be nice, if possible, if you could follow the following format - summarise your suggestion/comment/idea in 4/5 lines or bullets and then you can put in the supporting text/images descrtiption. Presentation will be about 10 - 15 slides approx.

The second is any info on Hubli-Dharwad, maps, current CDP, reports, studies, local knowledge and specific suggestions, profile etc. Would be most usefull to me.

I will put up the first draft of my presentation under this entry for your feedback as well.

This year's Nobel prize was awarded towards an idea of strategic economic geography. So, Hubli-Dharwad should take advantage of it's location. It is close to Central and Western India as well as close to major ports like Goa and Karwar. Had Tata's Nano project come there, it would be what Infy is to Bengaluru. This the link for the "Strategic Plan" of Kane county (similar to our district) in the state of Illinois, US: http://www.countyofkane.o... Perhaps you can get a general framework idea from the above plan. IMO, Hubli-Dharwad needs to focus immediately on 1) Power Infrastructure (major reason why Tata declined Hubli) 2) Connectivity infrastructure to Major Ports. If Hubli-Dharwad's "mini Detroit" can be seamlessly connected with Major national highways of India as well as ports along the coastline of Karnataka, it can act as a auto-export hub.

ssheragu Hello srkulhalli to be frank I have not visited Hubli or Dharwad but I can give a few general tips 1. to avoid traffic jams, strict segregation of residential & commercial areas and compulsory adherence to the same 2. shifting all the business & shopping activities to a separate area like downtown area in US cities 3. having a few shopping complexes with LARGE PARKING SPACES near residential layouts catering to everyday needs like food, medicines, etc. as in US cities 4. shifting & location of INDUSTRES exclusively in INDUSTRIAL ESTATS 5. identifying 3 or 4 TOTALLY SIGNAL FREE cemented wide roads (with 4 lanes on each side) in N-S & E-W directions for traffic 6. cementing all roads 7. provision of signals only in downtown areas and provdidng UNDERPASSES for pedestrians and UNDERPASSES or FLYOVERS for traffic (FLYOVERS & UNDERPASSES should be constructed in such a way that they do not spoil the aesthetcs) 8. laying of all TV cables, water lines, drainage & power lines (depending upon feasbility) underground 9. separate areas to be identfied for hawkers in all areas and pedestrian paths to be made free for pedestrians 10. no telephone juncton boxes or transformer boxes to clutter roads or pedestrian paths; these should be located in a separate site in each layout I hope you find these useful ssheragu

First draft of presentation - Hubli Dharwad

Thanks for the inputs so far. Will respond seperately.

"Click here" forthe first draft of presentation. Images need some sprucing up, can be more appropriate. Any good relevant images or links to where I can find images would be most welcome.

A little background. I didnt want to clutter up presentation with too many details. These things cant be decided in 20 mins or a day. Best strategy is to clearly communicate the broad idea, and if it generates interest, we can offer continued support

No specifics have been put in, because I dont have much Hubli Dharwad info yet. For eg: mass transport route map image can be an actual suggestion for Hubli Dharwad. Again, the actual routing should be done after thorough study, in this presentation, just drop in ideas.

Any feedback welcome.

Strategic plan for Hubli-Dharwad

Mcadambi, I think your points are very valid. It is however not related to the presentation I am preparing (related mainly to CDP). But I believe there is an economy section and if possible will try to pass it on. Power is something obvious. I am just wondering if Hubli-Dharwad has missed the bus on automobile. Chennai, Pune and now Gujarat have a head start as far as the eco-system to be automobile hub is concerned. Maybe they should focus on a different area (like diamond cutting in Surat) and go the whole hog on it to make it attractive. They need to get one big guy, like a Tata or Infy or Wipro to invest big. That will set the ball rolling as far as the economic development of the region goes.

Pretty good, ssheragu More than anything, I just find we think along very similar lines, and that helps to know we are talking sense I think I have covered most of the points are covered, if you go through the presentation. 1, 2, 3, 4 : part of planned township section 5: mass transport corridor section 7, 8, 9, & 10 : pay attention to roads section On roads, it needs to be instiutionalised. Which means that we need to have standard road designs which are well documented and new roads need to just pick from one of the available standard designs. Otherwise, it becomes a laundry list of things which are hard for anybody to keep in mind. So we do plan to form a road working group which will get working on this. Let me know if it interests you and you want to be part of it

ssheragu Definitely, I would like to be part of Road Working Group I have a few points 1. Classifications of Roads & Standard Road Designs should be found in Indian Road Congress (IRC); these can be listed in Praja 2. Also ASJ of Pune, has lot of information on UK Road Designs; these can also be listed by Praja in its web site and we can use these, if these are legally allowed to be used by Indian Law thanks Srinath Heragu

Thats good, we can have a call to see if we are aligned on what we want to acheive. Whats the best way - should we all skype - ASJ is in London and I believe Nithinjhanwar is in Jaipur, telephone calls can get expensive Srinath - I have ordered for all relevant IRC docs, should be getting it soon, but am not sure we are allowed to post it - will check that out. Sure, we will also make good use of Doc ASJ's postings ! Nithinjhanwar - Great to have a civil engineer here ! Looking forward to some good discussions

cdp (comprehensive development planning)

dear sir, i have seen hubli dharwad cdp plan in detail and i think i may suggest u something regarding the same.

  1. please remove that reigional park near unkal lake and keep only some part of it as a regional park and rest as residential, because still today people here in hubli and dwd are not having thier own residence in bset proximity and i find it is something un practical developing residential layouts in remote areas when we still have good number of agri land in and around hubli.which is most convinient to public.please try to implement some development of our lake even so that even it retains it beauty.
  2. and i have seen so many areas in gokul road and gamangatti area where un necessarily civic ameneties area have been alloted when their is no necessity in that  quantity .
  3. some how please manage to get our public a best residential areas and in good proximity.
  4. auto clusture area has been notified in gamangatti please try to make it ind / it clusture .
  5. and if u can then shift gokul industrial estate 1st and 2ad gate to this above said area and allot it commercial land use in future.
  6. and in strong requirment please keep the landuse changing policies in powers of hubli dwd locally if necessity.
