For over 18 months now, people around the country have been coming together under the aegis of ‘India Against Corruption’ to demand a strong anti-corruption law in the form of a JanLokpal Bill. India Against Corruption, a people's movement, hoped that after the passage of a strong Lokpal bill, it could take up various other reforms like decentralization, Electoral, Judicial, Police, Land etc which are needed to strengthen our democracy.

It has been 44 years now since the Lokpal bill was first introduced in the parliament and many governments have come and gone but this law has not seen the light of the day. Since the past 18 months, a number of hunger strikes and protests were held, but with no avail. Inspite of lakhs of people participating and supporting this fight, the ruling government and other political parties chose to lie to the people of this country and came together to ensure that the people of this country do not get a strong and effective Lokpal bill.

Various promises of support were made during the debate in parliament on the Lokpal bill, politicians from across all parties however conspired to ensure that the bill was buried. In addition they questioned the very legitimacy of civil society to participate in the process of law making. Every time they were questioned, they said members of civil society were ‘unelected, unelectable tyrants’ and said that if we wanted our voices to be heard we should first get elected and then only participate.

It is in this background that India Against Corruption has now embarked upon a very challenging task of providing a political alternative to the country. India Against Corruption subscribes to the pre-amble of our constitution in the true spirit and would like to intervene in the political process to ensure that the good & honest people enter parliament and take part in the legislative process.

We are in the process of studying and establishing best practices in good governance. We request your & your readers/ viewers participation in this initiative. For this reason, we would like to invite you to an open house discussion with IAC key member ‘Prashant Bhushan’ and look forward to your active participation.

The meeting was attended by about 100 participants at the forth floor of the school building. It consisted of

  1. Kejriwal party workers
  2. Media
  3. local audience

Picture of the audience with Prashanth Bhushan on the dais.

I heard Prashanth  Bhushan saying

“With an inept court and Government appointed Election commission surely results in a raddy”

when I took my seat in the audience.

There were lots of questions from the audience. The main concern of the new party seems to be the loot of nation’s assets like minerals and land when compared to that of the earlier monetary category.
