Venue: CiSTUP, IISc Bangalore
Tea: 5:15pm
Start Time: 5:30pm
Speaker: Dr Edvard Jobson, Environment Director, Volvo
Topic: Latest Hybrid technology for buses.
Description
The new hybrid buses features:
-
Fully electric, take-off from bus stops
-
More than 30% lower fuel consumption
-
50% less emissions of NOx and particulates
-
3dB less noise
The progress has been achieved by the development of a new HD parallel hybrid technology. An electric machine with more than 90% efficiency is used to recuperate the brake energy. Auxiliaries such as the AC, air compressor and steering servo have been electrified. The engine is developed with a stop and go function that turns of the engine at traffic lights and bus stops. The new compact D5 diesel engine brings further efficiency gain and the I-shift automatic manual transmission secures improved efficiency also in commuter traffic.
The first fleets have now been in service for 6 months. The fuel consumption is confirmed to be 30% lower than a new standard diesel bus with latest technology. Two demo buses have been circulating by bus operators in Europe and results from a variety of conditions confirms the robustness of the new technology. The environmental impact is superior to all known alternatives for public transports as confirmed by the new European rules for green public procurement of road transports.
Profile of the Speaker
The speaker, Edward Jobson, has a Phd in catalytic processes from Zurich, is a professor at Chalmers Institute of Technology, board member of Swedish catalysis society, and environmental director at Volvo Bus Corporation. He currently manages research activities in the areas of emission control, energy efficiency, hybrids, fuel cells and sustainable fuels.
He has been coordinator and president of large cooperation projects on emissions and fuel efficient engines, within the European Framework programmes. The research assignments have led to several inventions out of which 17 patents and patent applications have been registered. In 2001 control of the deterioration of catalysts led him to the “Henry Ford Award for technical excellence”.
