With elections on the horizon, the Yeddyurappa government directed the food and civil supplies department to give BPL ration cards to whoever produced an affidavit. Of the total 1.32 crore families in the state, today 1.07 crore, or 81% claim to be living below poverty line just to get access to the card!
"Decision to give cards to everyone who applies has costed the government anywhere between Rs 500 to Rs 600 crore,'' said the an official in the food department.
