Its been the bane of the slum that Bangalore has become that we do not have any credible mass public transport options in the city even after many years and many thousands of crores!
Its almost 10 years that the metro dream started in Bangalore and only parts of it is reality today. That reality is also far from ideal!
Metro was touted to be the panacea for all the city's traffic issues, instead its turned out to be a white elephant!
Coming to ridership numbers on the existing two line (reach 1, reach 3/3a) , its a fraction of what was initially projected and this affects the corporations bottomline really bad!
Around 50,000 person trips per day was projected and the current numbers hovers around 12000/13000 only!
So whats wrong?
The answers are many and the major one is route it caters to!
The real catchment areas were the IT hubs of the city, ITPL and EC. But unfortunately, both these routes have been ignored and instead BMRCL looks elsewherewhen planning and execution is concerned!
Logically, it would have made a lot of sense to have the metro coming to ITPL and EC first, instead both the routes were totally ignored !
There was an opportunity to make ammends with Phase II, by taking up the Kadugodi/ITPL connection from Byappanahalli first, but BMRCL floated tenders for Mysore road extensions and Kanakapura road extensions. Both these lines selected have very few establishments which can cater to the ridership, but still for unknown reasons they were selected.
Its high time we do course corrections and head towards ITPL asap. Going to EC might take more time as lot of integration points decissions and route still needs to be taken, however ITPL is the best bet for BMRC to make some good!
Hope the new MD looks into this on priority!

ph II tender updates
IL & FS has won the tender to build the elevated structure for the PH II metro extensions on Mysore road..
There are few educational institution and one tech park on this route, however the whitefield area is more dense with establishments of all types and that needs priority!
Bypenahalli-MG Road route is
Bypenahalli-MG Road route is no white elephant. It is being quite useful . Now from almost all the stops people are getting in and out. From 8 to 10 in the morning and 6 to 8 in the evening the train is full. It avoids 2 major traffic jams at NGEF and Trinity junctions. It has almost replaced autos in the route. If you are traveling from KR Puram side and want to get connection to Koramangala, Domlur take Metro and get down at Indiranagar because there are less buses from Binmangala, of course because of poor planning by BMTC. MG road has good connectivity to most places in Bangalore, so travel from any place to ITPL get down at MG road and take Metro for part of the route. There are so many ways it is being used even if the Metro network is not complete.
BMRCL financial status of present operations and future ???

P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm; }
The total revenue has reduced from 49.46 Crs in FY13 to 36.61 Crs in FY14, due to reduction in other income derived from short term deposits. The net loss has increased from 57.06 Crs in FY13 to 96.40 Crs in FY14 due to increase in Salaries and Wages (since project is labour intensive) apart from increase in Depreciation
Who is paying for those operating losses of BMRCL ???

numbers are showing big time!..
Metro rideship numbers are showing the reality that was discussed here on Praja long time ago..patronage will be a trickle if dense work places are not connected..
This is coming out very well with the ridership on Reach 1 itself falling lower than the reach 3, though being opened first in 2011. Reach 3 is doing relatively better because it caters to peenya.
The mysore road extension is a total failure, with almost no one using the trains now..

So, unless the WHitefield/EC/Ring road(SB-Marathalli) is not connected, metro would be no good!
BMRC should seriously consider to start going slow on reach 4 and mysore road extentions and get the precious resources concentraing on the above lines..
