Come 2011, and we will have our once in a decade census done. If the projections prove right (http://censusindia.gov.in...), then Karnataka would be pegged at ~ 5.94 crore people.
My interest however is detailed data for each state like whats in here (http://censusindia.gov.in...). It's a potential goldmine for analysis. Can we reach out to influence their questionnaire to add more data points of interest, or is it too late now!? Think of things like language, rural-urban migration, access to healthcare, use of BPL facilities, impact of NREGS etc.
Go through the Karnataka sheet to see for yourself on how nice the data points are and nicer they could be if some more questions were to be asked during the upcoming census.
Sample some, like this one - DISTRIBUTION OF HOUSEHOLDS BY CONDITION OF CENSUS HOUSES OCCUPIED BY THEM
Condition of Census Houses | Total | Rural | Urban | %
Total: | 10,232,133 | 100% | 6,675,173 | 100 | 3,556,960 | 100% |
Good | 4,491,851 | 43.9% | 2,414,280 | 36.2% | 2,077,571 | 58.4% |
Livable | 5,234,234 | 51.2% | 3,873,692 | 58.0% | 1,360,542 | 38.2% |
Dilapidated | 506,048 | 5% | 387,201 | 5.8% | 118,847 | 3.3% |
So few households in 3rd category, even in rural areas, interesting.
Or sample this - Type of Drainage Connectivity for Waste Water Outlet:
Type of Drainage | Total | % | Rural | % | Urban | % |
Total Households | 10,232,133 | 6,675,173 | 3,556,960
Closed drainage | 1,766,563 | 17.3% | 285,507 | 4.3% | 1,481,056 | 41.6% |
Open Drainage | 3,475,862 | 34% | 2,076,967 | 31.1% | 1,398,895 | 39.3% |
No Drainage | 4,989,708 | 48.8% | 4,312,699 | 64.6% | 677,009 | 19% |
58% (39.3 + 19) of even urban households don't have access to a regular drainage connection.
I don't know how exactly the census is done, yet to learn and understand.

Or take this
Type of fuel used for cooking:
Total 10,232,133 100.0 6,675,173 100.0 3,556,960 100.0
Fire-wood 6,639,769 64.9 5,656,984 84.7 982,785 27.6
27.6% of urban households still use Fire-wood as fuel for cooking.
But, from page 6 (of this doc http://censusindia.gov.in...), 90% of urban households had access to electricity.
V.1 Total number of households 10,232,133 100.0 6,675,173 100.0 3,556,960 100.0
V.2 Electricity and toilet both available 3,599,548 35.2 1,015,836 15.2 2,583,712 72.6
V.3 Electricity available but toilet not available 4,437,504 43.4 3,801,077 56.9 636,427 17.9
Census 2011 with more data
I think census 2011 will extract much more data than what we have from 2001 census, which itself had been hailed as revelutionary by UN, etc. Steps are already underway to use IT in a big way for census 2011. See below:
The preparations for the 2011 Census have begun. Recently, a conference on “Technology Options for 2011 Census” was held on 3rd and 4th December 2007 at New Delhi. In the Conference experts from Government and industry presented their views on data collection through paper (for scanning & ICR purpose) and on using Hand Held devices for direct data entry in selected urban areas, to begin with. The consensus was by and large to continue the use of improved ICR Technology for 2011 Census along with experimenting and doing trial runs to assess the cost effectiveness and workability of the combined use of technologies. This exercise would be carried out further during 2008-2009.

The Census 2001 has been exceptional in more than one way. The foremost thing about this census has been that all tabulations are based on 100% count which is unlike previous censuses when sampling was resorted to. The use of intelligent Character Recognition (ICR) technology has made it possible. Besides this is first census of the 21st century and the new millennium. Therefore, Census 2001 results will become the benchmark for future censuses. The data on economic indicators and, in particular, the structure of the workforce shall help in measuring the effect of the structural changes taking place in the economy since its deregularization and decontrol.
The following pages of the publication provide highlights from the results of Census 2001 and other useful information for familiarizing the users about the vast array of data collected and published In Census. A catalogue of select data products (e.g., books, CDs, maps, data sheets, etc.) is also provided, which will give an idea information being made available by the Census. Details about the new facility being extended by the census organization for giving customized tables and maps based on user’s requirement, are also given.

2010 Census is being planned to be the initial database for UAID
Naveen,
Apart from use of technology and IT abundantly in 2010 Census excercise, according to the union home minister, it will also be considered as the input to the UAID database. Basically 2010 will be built as National population register and this will act as the UAID database.
Very good plan and deserves all the support.
