Idea is a thought or conception which actually exists only in the mind. An idea when the thought is converted into an object, process or technique which displays an element of novelty becomes an invention. However, some inventions also represent a radical breakthrough in science or technology which extends the boundaries of human knowledge. Legal protection can sometimes be granted to an invention by way of a patent. Innovation is the act of putting invention that has been put into practice. Click here for the full text.
For example VKM sir’s U-SEE is an invention as it has won a World Bank sponsored competition. Patenting is necessary to claim ownership of this invention. In the absence of any such threat of competition for ownership or enormity of contribution to human knowledge there is no need for a patent.
VKM sir’s invention is therefore open to the general public/companies for use free of cost. However his claims like unlimited saving of electricity etc is a misnomer. Praja wholeheartedly congratulates VKM sir for the recognition he got for his U-SEE invention. As suggested elsewhere by Mr. Thampan in Praja VKM sir needs to perfect his invention to be more useful. The follwing is a Quote from Mr. Thampans above reffered comment which is relevent, is reproduced below for convinience:-
"An idea i had on these lines some time back was to use huge reflectors and channel the sunlight through optical fibers into buildings, where a diffuser can spread the light out. These reflectors can be on the terraces. Of course technology has to be developed to efficiently channel the light and send the energy concentrated through the optical fiber and then spread it out."
Using optical fibers instead of cumpbersome mirror or a train of mirrors is definitely more practicle and hence commertially attractive. I wish our Underground Metro Stations Like the one in New Delhi and Future Bangalore Metro Stations come forward to use U-SEE. As far as my knowledge goes, The Solar water heater is a resounding sucess so far. Can U-SEE be the next?

No feed back from Praja's?
PSA Sir
I deliberately waited all these days in the hope that Prajegalu will envince some interest in this post of a Scientist who was convinced about U-SEE (Scientists are very strict in accepting theoretical/practical suggestions on their face value - they dig, dig and dig and then accept).
U-SEE is the best next thing that will be considered by people for implementation in their residences when black outs will be compulsory. You have also rightly said about 'patent', creation of a identifiable 'product' with marketability etc. But my intention is to give it to the world as a gift and a future way of getting free infinite solar light for day and night use. I am doing it albeit at micro level. Print and Electronic media have already done it.
Anything given on a platter free of cost, is eyed with suspicion or considered as something that can be had anytime they want because it is free. That is the mentality of most of the consumers of basic needs in life. If something is not available, they will crave for it, hoard it and even let it rot because they have paid for it.
So far as I am concerned, CREST of NIE has envinced interest and has this package with them and would be directing the final semester engineering students of various disciplines to take U-SEE as a project. I have been taking part and demonstrating U-SEE periodically in NIE's rural awareness on energy programmes.
- Hope Prajas will implement U-SEE and get the benefit. They can feel free to call me on 9845950440 as to how they can implement U-SEE in their homes and save for themselves from elec.bills, live in bright interiors, get free light.
