Mayor shelves road widening

Just happened to come across this news from couple of weeks ago. BBMP Mayor finally shelves the road widening plans. Temporarily? Your guess is as good as mine.

Aug/6 - Chronicle:

BIAAPA - Bangalore International Airport Area Planning Authority

Sharing a not so familiar 'authority', notified in '96. http://biaapa.in/. Found this website trying to research ITIR.

BDA - Multi - Story Housing

Just came back from another week long Singapore trip. Every time you look at those high rise apartments, can't help wonder how Bangalore would benefit if it had its share. It would have been impossible for Singapore to be that green without them.

ITIR - Gaining Momentum

GOK passed the ITIR Act 2010 on Thursday, becoming the first state to do so. Per this DH Report:

The ITIR Act, 2010 will enable the state to attract a whopping Rs.2 trillion (Rs.2 lakh crore) global investments in the knowledge sector, boost exports and create 3 million jobs in a decade

BBMP and Mosquitoes

Taking a deviation to discuss a less fancy but important topic. Public Health.

According to today's DH Report, "Mosquito Control Project Director" Dr Lokesh says:

The Palike is spraying pesticides, carrying out fogging and has launched several health awareness camps to educate the public about maintaining cleanliness in and around their houses.

...has assigned three people to spray pesticides in each ward.

...has also undertaken a publicity drive to inform every citizen about the precautionary measures.

So the story goes. I haven't seen a single fogging machine or guys spraying pesticides at work. If DH wouldn't report it, I wouldn't have a clue there was a 'publicity drive'. But everything stated implies things that have either happened in the past or presently ongoing.

Do I live in a different Bangalore? Have you seen any of the above in your ward?

Bangalore's Big Dig Dream?

This DH Report on 10/May notes: "The State government has long-term plans to build tunnel roads in the City to ease traffic congestion" said ..... Minister R Ashok on Monday.

Consider this against the effort spent reducing the length of Namma Metro Under Ground alignment.

Binny Mills to KG Bus Stand is one such tunnel road being discussed. Fortunately, "the proposals are in preliminary stage and nothing concrete has emerged so far, he said".

BTW, Namma metro's west bound UG alignment is not too far away!

Metro - MG Road Boulevard

BMRC has uploaded an artists impression of the proposed MG Road Boulevard. Large 10MB file full of graphics.
MG Road Boulevard

Proposal is for a two level boulevard,  spread along a 400m corridor next to the metro pillars that ends at Anil Kumble Jn.

Should be a nice place to go to if the reality turns out as good.... Couldn't help think why cramp so many different activities in just a half a km stretch. Personally I'd prefer a single theme to a place, and many such places along the Metro lines. Why only MG Road? Why not landscape and use area under the pillars along many such places in the city?

BMTC - S1 Route (Vijayanagar to Vijayanagar)

Saw these buses plying on outer ring road near BTM layout yesterday & today.

Looks like an extension of Big10 concept, Big10 to Circle Routes to S (not sure what it stands for) routes?

Surprisingly, while the BMTC call center did not have any detail to offer, the buses seemed to quite fully loaded!. I got bumped from the call center guy to the control room to Vijayanagar Bus Stand (22952362). All were cordial, willing to help, but had no info to offer.

Global Financial District near BIAL

Today's BS carries this item on a proposed Global Financial District, to cater to banking & financial sector. This 200 Acre plan, located near BIAL is expected to use PPP or JV Model for development.

Land Acquisition for Metro UG Stretch - expect more delays?

Just noticed the numbers for land acquisition in the Feb Newsletter

UG NS Stretch - Proposed: 14, Possession Taken: 8, Demolished: 7

UG EW Stretch - Proposed: 129, Possession Taken:0 (!), Demolished: 0 (!).

Carlton Fire - What can we learn?

Earthquake in Haiti showed us results of bad construction practices. A 5.1 Richter scale quake is a distinct possibility in Bangalore per this study.

BBMP - Projects on GIS?

Pwe this 21/Oct item 'Palike to upload civic works info online' DH reports a laudable effort by BBMP.

Once it is done (I'd really hope that it will), info on all road related projects will be on GIS Maps, up on their website.

Monday Madness or Rains or Something else?

Did you notice yesterday's (Monday) traffic mess?

I had to do 6 trips y'day (Mysore Road, Indian Express, BTM, CBD Area).  Every single one took almost twice as long as it generally takes. Five others I spoke to had the same experience (travelling in different parts of Bangalore).
