In this season of bad news, here's something to cheer. People turned out in impressive numbers to vote in all the states where assembly elections have taken place recently. Their faith in this crucial democratic exercise is heartening, especially when parts of the public sphere are resonating with anti-politician rhetoric.
One of the strengths of India vis-a-vis Pakistan is a functioning electoral democracy. Our politicians corrupt and inept many of them may be deserve some credit on this count. Unlike in our neighbourhood, the political process in India has gained deep roots over the years. Our lawmakers, as much as our civil society, have contributed to the process of deepening democracy.
