A12-year-old boy was washed away in a storm water drain in Venkateshwarnagar slum near Deepanjali nagar on Friday. The open drain and delay in transporting silt removed from the drain led to the mishap. Arvind Kumar was playing with two friends around 3.30pm. Seeing a ball floating in the drain, he stood on the heap of silt to pick it up, slipped and fell into the drain. Arvind’s father Hanumanthappa is a weaver in Cubbonpet and his mother Devamma is a daily wage laborer. [1]

These kinds of mishaps are a regular feature in successive years in the rainy season. [2]

This at best is a very sad commentary of our failed democracy. Yeddyurappa the present chief minister is no better than his many predecessors in not demanding from BBMP for any possible explanation for the poor Rain water management on the city roads. The rain water management is an important aspect apart from providing for smooth

  1. pedestrians,
  2. NMT and
  3. MT traffic.

We would also expect from the present Mayor a lady though SSLC failed / passed to galvanize BBMP to do some thing worth while to avoid such tragedies henceforth. This is possible only with proper road engineering which includes robust Rain and Sewage Water Management. Apart from this the roads are the most important town planning elements, for smooth, least entropy traffic for the city of Bangalore.
