BDA Junction

BDA Junction
BDA Junction
Two long up and down ramps will be made on the Hebbal Main Road. Two box underpasses will allow vehicles to move from Banglore Palace towards Malleswaram, and those coming from Cauvery junction to take a right turn towards Malleshwaram. As the ramps will need embankments, it is estimated that this project will take more time. The cost is estimated at Rs 2.5 crore and will take approximately 45 days to complete.

Hey Photoyogi...

Good job.. great pictures. I totally agree with your point abt Movie / Political posters and the width of the underpass, why can't they make bigger underpass.

Cellular Boxes - Update @ BDA Jn

The Side wall of the ramp on the windsor manor side seems to be having better progress here are some interesting pics on the quality of material and possible implementation mess-ups Ok thats not all, look at the Road width, this is the "lane" one will be driving into when he/she takes a left turn when coming down Palace road and takes a left leading towards Windsor Manor Jn. This Road is about 9 foot paces of mine ie 9 X 1.5 = 13.5 Ft and yes sir, all the foot path has been consumed. Just remembered, this very footpath is the Bus stop for several school children and office goers. I wonder where thats going to get shifted to. -- Praveen Sundaram AkA PhotoYogi

Insane

Is something wrong with the BBMP? They are now trying to organize poster sticking culture and make money out of it. What a bunch of jokers... Do we have visionaries?? or Vision awrys.. Is this inside the underpass?? thanks for the pic Praveen - but this gesture of BBMP is very disappointing and annoying.

Re: Insane

Yes This is inside the Magic Boxes the very " vertical-plane-surfaces" i had mentioned in an earlier post.. Its sad that this is the way it should be. I hope some one is reading these posts of ours. -- Praveen Sundaram AkA PhotoYogi

BBMP commissioner responds !

Looks like atleast the BBMP commissioner listens to critiscism and comments from experts. Here is what he has to say on the comments / suggestion on Underpass design:

I have gonethrough the opinion of experts expressed in the series - Concrete Solution? There were a lot of issues that really impressed me. By and large experts have given full marks for the technology. However some of them have criticised it referring to the underpass constructed at the Cauvery junction. But they are not against adopting the technology.

I agree the underpass at the Cauvery junction should have been wider. There is always a scope to learn from the past experience. We have increased the width of the underpass at BDA junction to 5.5 m. Similarly, we are making all efforts to improve the technology as we move on to other junctions.

I never said precast technology is the only solution to solve the traffic problems of Bangalore City. All roads in the city are not wide or good enough to accommodate the increasing vehicular population. Palike looked at precast technology as one of the solutions. The long term measure to solve the problem is having more stilt roads,
roads on storm water drains. I have been saying that underpasses using precast technology is a short-term measure. It is cost-effective and time saving. Many experts who contributed to the series agreed with this.

Even though the underpass at the Cauvery junction was completed in 33 days it is a record. The underpass at the Cauvery junction received lot of criticism, yet lakhs of vehicles have passed through it since it was opened and fuel worth crores has been saved. I don’t say what Palike has done is perfect. It is unrealistic to expect perfection at the first step itself. It is just an initiative.

Praja Community should take initiative !

Friends,
After reading the responses from Dr. Subramanium and Krishna Reddy of BBMP, it should be clear that the sincere and honest feedback does brings positive outcomes. Now I am even more encouraged that we can also contribute to the efforts of BBMP in a positive way that would help our beloved City - Bengaluru.

I have a suggestion and request that praja community members based in Bangalore could offer BBMP their expertise and moral support. It can start with a identifying the next underpass to be built, get professional help in designing the underpasses from the experts that elicited their views in DH and other forums. I hope many will be more than happy to help BBMP with their expertise and time. Help BBMP in what ever way it needs to implement that underpass. I know it is a time consuming efforts requiring coordination with BBMP, Structural Engineers/experts, Highways / Road Civil Engineers, Architects etc. We can start with first talking/meeting with the BBM commissioner. Then follow up with forming a core team who would help the BBMP with the design, analysis, QA and Public Relations

Unfortunately currently I am not in B'lore these days to chip in with my time and efforts. I wish I could be in B'lore these days.

Any volunteers? Please feel free to comment on this suggestion.

Yes we can!

Aa Syed said here, all our discussions should be as constructive as possible, fact based, and honest. The more we stay away from simple this sucks that sucks comments and posts the better it is. If we dont like something, let us suggest all solutions that we can, and if possible try to get experts to join the forum. Once we get a large constructive mass of concerned people and experts here, I am sure we will get heard.

Y Intersection on the Bellary Road

The Bellary road encounters a Y intersection near the Jakkur air base. One wing of 'Y' continues towards Devanahalli and the other goes towards yelahanka.

The traffic moving from Jakkur towards this junction do not pose any problem. They move smoothly towards either Yelahanka or Devanahalli.
The concern is about the traffic moving from Yelahanka onto the Bellary road and towards the city.

There are always a couple of traffic policemen monitoring this junction and stopping the traffic on the Bellary road to allow the traffic from Yelahanka to move onto the Bellary road. This, of course, seems to be a temporary solution as the BBMP is planning to provide a signal-free road to BIAL.

So, an under-pass at this junction seems to be inevitable!
Are there any plans already to have an under-pass at this junction?

been thinking about the same

been thinking about the same junction. I used to travel down that road for 5 years. The problem isnt of only the junction - there is also a railway track that is used quite heavily. so building and underpass would make sense if it went under the railway track also. There were plans of building this as part of the main NH upgradation - which never happened. I have a very strong feeling, that when the Airport opens more than 50% work on the "signal free" ride will be remaining. They are working at a frusturatingly slow pace, and everytime you pass junction you feel even more frusturated! I have seen the rate at which Private buildings come up in Bangalore - almost as fast as those time lapse videos in discovery! Why cant BBMP hand over the construction of these underpasses to private agencies, more reputed ones. L&T being a stake holder in BIAL I am sure could help with the underpasses - if they were either paid for it or given adveritising rights! I think the BBMP is getting away with some very bad planning and very shoddy work. Cauvery Junction is going to a jam within a year. The "U" turn idea is fine now, because 80% of the busses are diverted. The underpass is way to narrow. I Understand nobody can be perfect at the first shot, but then why choose such an importang congested junction as your fast shot? It could have been another underpass. I have this sinking feeling that the widht of the Ramp on bellary road at BDA junction isnt going to be wide enough too.

Not perfect at the first step?

I've read this a couple of places. That's no big deal right? For a long time, we are taught "Do it right the first time" mantra. And it makes a lot of sense.

Private Partnership is the Mantra for Bengaluru

I think one of the best designed flyovers in India is the Mysore road flyover. L&T executed it and though it is not the most used flyover in Bangalore its design and ease of use and aesthetics are to be lauded here.. GoK had issues with L&T then on financing the project and it took a lot of time to execute it.

In todays scenario I am sure they are one great company to handover these projects like underpasses or flyovers so that we have something thats worldclass and works for our city.

BDA Jn Due Dt 17th April?

The Work had started on 2nd March http://www.flickr.com/pho... and the schedule was 45 days so are we going to be able to "fly over" the BDA Jn by 17th April 08? I dont think so... not at the current pace of work. The ramps on both sides of the magic boxes are quite in-complete i would say 30-40% done. After which the soil/gravel needs to be compacted well, then the road. My guesimate says at least another month without cutting corners. -- Praveen Sundaram AkA PhotoYogi

BDA Jn Update 24th April

The BDA Junction Underpass was Due Dt 17th April 2008. But looks like they got a breather with the confusions at BIAL and have taken it easy. Its also likely that the contractors did not have sufficient moulds to make the cellular boxes there by delaying the process. Anyways folks here are some photo updates as on 24th April 2008. As you can see finally we do have a Pedestrian walk way, but unfortunately it is not placed at a point that is convenient. Assuming that people will adjust? Umm the other end of the walk way has a narrow footpath that tapers towards the turning towards Palace road where its barely 1 ft :-( Over all the progress at the BDA Jn seems to be going really slow work is at about 80% complete status. So...What is pending is, the finishing of the ramp on either side and the exterior finishing. Gaah! So much for deadlines. -- Praveen Sundaram AkA PhotoYogi

Pedestrian Walkthru at BDA Jn 26th April 08

Finally, the Pedestrian walkways are getting in place. This walkthru is on the cauvery junction side of the ramp, looks decent too I hope its going to be well illuminated in the evening-night time. Some thing to think, is the width of this pedestrian walk-thru the same size as the Anandnagar underpass?? Will update soon. -- Praveen Sundaram AkA PhotoYogi

blind spots at Pedestrian walk thrus

TS, the last time i spoke to the contractors on site reg round convex mirrors he jokingly told me that would get stolen! - "ಸರ್ ಆದುನ ಕಲ್ಥನ ಮಾಡ್ತಾರೆ ಸಾರ್, ವೊಂದು ಪೀಸ್ ಕಂಬಿ ಬಿಡೋದಿಲ್ಲ" : sheer lack of respect to public property. This leaves us with speed breakers or a manned signal system. btw just downloaded the google sketchup its a cool app! -- Praveen Sundaram AkA PhotoYogi

Forgotten about underpasses !

Has this underpass made any progress in the midst of Elections and yet another postponement BIAL start date?

It seems we also have forgotten about underpasses?
