Praja related

We are glad to announce availaibility of Praja also in Kannada. Although users could create posts and comments in Kananda since the beginning, starting today users will be able to see a lot of the interface elements in Kannada as well.

Moreover, members could now also translate useful posts from English to Kannada or vice-versa allowing more members to access useful content in a language of their choice. Members interested in translating the content can mail tech at praja.in and they will be given suitable rights to acces translation interface.

You can see praja in Kannada here. If you have difficulty reading Kannada text or writing in Kannada, look at these pages for some help.

We hope that the members use the feature enough and write posts/comment and translate between languages to make this feature worth retaining for the future.

If you notice any irregularities in translation or have better suggestions for words and phrases, let us know through a comment on this thread or by mailing tech at praja.in

Note: Due to technical difficulties, some suffixes in Kannada appear broken. These will be corrected in future.

Automatic translation?

Wondering if it will be possible to setup auto-translation (kannada english, and vice versa) for all posts. I am sure these mechanic translators will not do the best job, but something may be better than nothing.

Kannada post appearing as gibberish - pl educate unicode....

I also felt the same difficulty. When I tried to post a Kannada message of congratulations to Tech Team and others involved with a Huge Garland of Mysore Jasmines, my post appeared in a gibberish format.

This means, the reader will have to convert the text by using translation through unicode etc.  For this, it will be necessary to download Baraha, save it, execute/ run it and has to go through some procedure.

Have a look at the following and can we make Praja's life that much simpler - there may be a number of non-Kannadigas who may be interested in learning Kannada at their leisure hours.  If in Kannada Praja or even in English Praja, every day, if one Kannada alphabet is taught to them, it will go a long way in helping them learn the State official language and we can create goodwill and also help them to cross language barriers.  - My two paise.

Nice to have Kannada Praja.

Typing in Kannada

VKM,

To write in unicode, you must use BarahaIME (not Baraha). BarahaIME comes along with Baraha and provides text in Unicode directly. You can type directly on Praja website once you have turned BarahaIME on.

Alternatively one can also go to Google Indic page and type text there and copy-paste from there to praja.

(I have converted your text on both pages using Baraha Convert)

About teaching Kannada to non-Kannadigas on Praja, I think there are other initiatives that are already on this task. Doing that on Praja might mean a repetition of efforts and might not be the best use of resources. We can instead lead nterested folks to those initiatives. But then, thats my personal opinion.

The biggest reason I think Kannada (and in future, other Indian languages) need to be on Praja is to provide the local content in local language so that civic activism and modern ideas about governance do not remain exclusive to English speaking Indians. A lot of local issues make sense only in local contexts and the importance of language can not be ignored on those aspects.

We would all be happy for you and everyone else on Praja to post content in Kannada (or other local relevant languages). Praja can show text in any language as long as the text is entered in Unicode.

VKM - ಅವರೇ,

Google Indic( http://google.com/transliterate/kannada)  is indeed a convenient way to type Kannada text using regular english key-boards.

Another extremely good tool provided by Google is the Transliteration bookmarklet (http://t13n.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/blet/docs/help_kn.html). Read this link for further help. 'Installing' this bookmarklet will help you type in Kannada, in any website, not just Praja.

Kannada Interface and Content..

Shastri/Tech,

Its indeed a very positive step to have a Kannada inteface and build Kannada content.

From the link posted ( http://praja.in/kn ), I did notice the partially Kannada interface. It dawned upon upon me that the non-Kannada items were ont inteface elements :)

I am sure the backend translation engine isnt Google. but, Would you also like to try transliteration API or a similar other tool to provide Kannada typing facilities on Praja..

That will help people view a comment and then draft a comment on the same page, just the same advantage/power the Enlish interface has.
