India ranked 35th among 143 nations
- Happy Planet Index (HPI)-Compiled by UK Based New Economics Foundation
- Basis: High life expectancy and ecological footprint - a measure which takes into account carbon emissions by individuals.
- This scenario indicates that even without destructive development, good life is possible without costing the earth.
- it also indicates ecological efficiency with which happy and healthy lives are supported.
- Costa Rica tops the list - Among the BRIC nations, Brazil and China are ranked at 9th and 20th places respectively.
- UK-74th, Russia-108th, US-114 - indicates that the successfully developed nations are the worst performing in terms of sustainable well-being.
- The above clearly brings out that India's opposition for across the board GHG emission control for all nations, expressed at G8 meet was in the right direction.
