PB Mahishi might go
Change Of The State’s Chief Secretary?
Guv contemplating shifting the incumbent chief secretary P B Mahishi.
While the Governor is said to have discussed the issue with key people during his three-day visit to Delhi from November 26 to 28, the issue may have come up during a lunch that the Governor had with cabinet secretary K M Chandrashekar on Tuesday.
While it is not known what reasons the new regime will cite if Mahishi is shifted, the fact that he was appointed by the regime headed by H D Kumaraswamy and his closeness to the H D Deve Gowda family may prove to be his undoing.
These sources told Deccan Herald that the Congress-led UPA coalition at the Centre would not like any shadow of the Gowda family on the new administration.
Before becoming chief secretary, Mahishi was secretary, PWD, a department for which another Gowda son, H D Revanna was the minister.
While he was appointed as chief secretary, the 1972-batch officer, Mahishi had superseded five others but it is not known whom the new administration would prefer if he is to be changed. These five officers are either retired now or on deputation to the Centre, unwilling to get back to the state. Mahishi, who took over on January 1, 2007, has about a year more to go for retirement.
Mahishi came under attack from his fellow IAS officer M N Vijay Kumar who was transferred six times within a span of six months between September 2006 and February 2007 by the state executive headed by Mahishi. Some of the postings lasted only three days.
The only time in the recent history when the incumbent chief secretary was removed in Karnataka took place during the tenure of S Bangarappa as chief minister of the State when S Shankaranarayanan was shifted to bring in N K Prabhakara Rao.
