Overflowing toilets - a serious hygiene issue at Kadugodi Bus Station.

On Saturday, 4th October 2014, a few of us came out with a plan to clean up the Kadugodi Pedestrian Over Bridge. It is almost a year since this structure became a reality. As regular users and also concerned community members, we were worried by the amount of waste materials being dumped on it. Added to it, the roof of the connecting side of the bridge to the railway station was heavily dumped with falling leaves, thrown away food and plastic materials.
It was an effort carried out by only few of us, but we made sure the objective was well achieved.
A huge support was extended from the Whitefield Railway Station Manager, Mr. Anand Sivaram and his staff.
However, carrying out the cleaning campaign, we were shocked to observe an extremely serious hygiene issue.
At the side of the bridge connecting the BMTC station, we found, heavy leakage and clogging from the toilets of the bus station. As you may see from the photo attached, it was extremely disturbing site to see.
Checking with the Railway Station Manager, we found that, repeated plea from Railways to cement the leakage has been ignored and have seen no favorable action from BMTC side till now.
With frequent rain and with the waste accumulate increasing by each passing day; the situation is turning to a serious hygiene issue for public. There are many cases of dengue and other diseases getting reported and this will be another reason for spreading such cases.
It has to be noted that more than 10,000 people use the sky bridge for reaching the bus or railway station every day.
Thinking more about it, I now find the reason why I get to see BMTC drivers and conductors relieving themselves on the road. The male staff can get away like that. But, what about the female staff? Where do they go, if the facilities are not properly maintained and managed?!
Organisations like BMTC should act proactively for the welfare of the public and their staff.
I humbly request BMTC Management through the office of BMTC MD, Dr. Ekroop Caur, IAS, to consider urgent repair of the toilets at Kadugodi BMTC station and plug the leaks and work hand in hand with Railway authorities to avoid any hygiene issues.
Sincere regards,
Ramesh Menon

complaint lodged with BMTC

I mailed the following to complaintsATmybmtcDOTcom:
Dear Sirs/ Madams - Clicking on this link (to this blog) will give show a report, along with pictures, of the sad state the toilet facilities at Kadugodi bus station is in, posing a serious health hazard to the public in general. Request immediate needful.
Earlier, I contacted Toll Free No: 1-800-425-1663. Even with my choosing the option of speaking in English, the operator came on in Kannada, all very polite though. I responded in Kannada, and narrated the details. But, in the midst of it all, the line went dead, for reasons not too clear.
Subsequently, I contacted the Control Room on 22952422. It was picked up promptly. When I narrated the problem, he proceeded to give me the ph no of the East Division, and suggested that I speak to them. When I told him sternly that it was his job to do that, he relented with a "aayithu bidi - maadtheeni", and cut off the line.
I expect this is more than what one can expect from BMTC. Let's see if they act promptly on the complaint.

Dear Rao - Thank u for the feed back. and the same has been sent to the concerned unit head Dc east to take necessary action
With regards, ATM (Public complaits), BMTC.
I had copied my complaint to the personal id of Dr Ekroop Caur, MD, BMTC, too, who had responded saying she'll initiate action. I would like to believe the response of ATM (public complaints) is independent of that, though it is highly doubtful.

Dear all,

While doing the Kadugodi pedestrian over bridge cleaning campaign in October, it came to our notice about the unhealthy condition that prevailed near the bridge. I took it up with the BMTC and other authorities immediately, with the help of Whitefield Railway Station Manager, whose requests were ignored by the BMTC repeatedly.

Initially, BMTC were silent on this request and a series of notes through emails and social media have now resulted in the MD responding and ordering for urgent measures to make this area clean and safe.

A time frame of 7 days is given for this work in her order.

If ever you pass by the over bridge or the bus stand please be kind enough to have an eye and let me informed whether her orders are being actioned or not.

It will be a great help for me being away at this point of time.

Happy to inform that the bridge, especially the extensions are now kept clean.

Thank you in advance,

Ramesh Menon
