BusPublic Transport

From The Hindu, Apr 17:

At a time when Bangaloreans are craving for more buses, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) could add only 58 new buses and 108 new routes as against the target of 1,000 buses and about 500 routes in 2010-11.

The reason: The BMTC did not get even a single new bus during the last financial year and the 58 buses it added to the fleet were part of the JNNURM-funded project meant for 2009-10. It had plans to induct at least 1,000 buses in 2010-11 to fulfil its vision 2020 by when it targeted to have 10,246 buses in its fleet.

I dont understand BMTC if introduce proper bus routes there is a 200% chance that people will use public transport. The problems here are bus routes are not planned.

There are places where in no bus routes and people depend on three wheelers. Let me add a simple example

a person need to go to marthahalli from vignan nagar or kaggadasapura has to go hal airport road by a three wheeler or by walk and then board a bus from hal airport road. People are harassed by auto drivers and to avoid all these take their private vehicles. Imagine a bus route from kaggadasapura or vignan nagar to some place via airport road all problems solved. But no body understand problems of public.

And that's the reason I cannot take a strong stand against people using private vehicles. Most of them do so because of all-kind-of-problems-we-have-already-discussed-in-different-posts, common man if can afford to take its 2-wheeler or 4-wheeler for his/her comfort, they feel better than to negotiate with errant and rude auto-wallahs and walk alone in the nighttime from/to bus-stop etc. The major thing is last-mile connectivity. Until that gets improved, I mean, its not justified even talking about or forcing/encouraging people to use Public Transport.

It is imperative to have positive dialogue with BMTC decision makers. For this purpose praja has to rejuvenate the two-way discussions and influence BMTC to form Commuter Forums to understand and appreciate the ground realilities faced by the existing and would-be bus commuters.
