Transport commissioner Bhaskar Rao stated that the new measure, besides curbing the menace of middlemen, would help the department get proper confirmation of the address proof of the applicants.
Transport Minister Ashoka added the department would go ahead with digital fare meters and four-stroke engines for all autorickshaws. Four-stroke engines will reduce pollution, and also vibration, when the vehicle is moving.

While all of the above is fine, what about the far more urgent measure of introduction of HSRP's (high security registration plates), which, considering its gravity, no less than the Supreme court had mandated, way back in May this year, for implementation implementation within three months. When I brought up the matter before Mr Bhasker Rao. at a function about a fortnight back, his responses, I am sorry to say, were far from convincing. This even as the security scenario is becoming more and more challenging by the day.
And, delivery of the DL's and RC's are the least of the problem areas. If the department really wants to make a change, there are many more things it needs to do, and none of which is rocket science.
