It is a matter of shame that we treat our state guest with such shabby hospitality. This is the sordid tale of hospitality rendered to the India's next Supreme Court Chief Justice. Justice Altimas Kabir was treated with soiled linen and torn towels at the state owned Kumara Krupa guest house. More shocking is the behavior of state employees at the guest house.

A senior Supreme Court judge, widely tipped to become the next Chief Justice of India (CJI), checked in at the state-owned Kumara Krupa Guest House late on Friday night. A king’s welcome should have been awaiting him. Instead, he was greeted by a sleepy and reluctant attendant who, instead of showing him to the VVIP room allotted for him, gave him an ordinary room with stained bed linen and torn towels.

Justice Altamas Kabir came to the city to preside over Sunday’s convocation function of the National Law School University of India (NLSUI), which had President Pratibha Patil participating as the chief guest.

Justice Kabir could have checked into any of the star hotels in the city, but “his love of simple living” made him check into the state guest house. The department of personnel and administrative reforms (DPAR), which maintains the guest house, had allotted Room No. 2 on the ground floor for the judge. But the on-duty attendant, who received Justice Kabir bleary-eyed, checked him into Room No. 9 on the first floor.

Hats off to the Justice Kabir for preferring to stay at the state guest house instead of opting to stay at one of 5-star hotels. That tells the greatness of the man and his demeanor. Wish our politicians and Babus take some lessons from this man.

Justice Kabir, truly, we the Citizens of Bengaluru, apologize for your inconvenience and salute you for your humility and simplicity.
