The recent tragedy on Mysore -Nanjangud Road, apart from the horrible condition of the road, brought other equally important aspects such as overloading of vehicle, poordriving habits as well as drunken driving among the main causes.
School children are ferried to and fro in autorickshaws in Mysore everyday.
We have seen children hanging on to the rod, overloaded as they are in an autorickshaw, as the driver runs the vehilcle at full speed.
Autoricksahws are supposed to hoist a flag indicating they are ferrying school children so that other vehiles slow down or give way to the rickshaw.Nobody has seen a rickshaw with a hoised flag.
Are we waiting for an accident to occur and then only wake up? Safety to passengers happen when rules and regulations are followed all the time and monitored by inspectors.
Chandigarh banned autorickshaws from frerrying school children in 2009 itself. ( see : http://www.topnews.in/cha...)
The Administaration there even offered to provide help to the autorickshaw drivers to procure 4 wheeled minivans.
Our Administration should have strict rules and regulations in place monitor and levy fines etc till such time we replace them with 4 wheelers.
Otherwise it may be a repeat of other accidents that we see everyday..
