Planetarium and the Vishweshwariah museum - a study in contrast

Last Thursday my boys and I visited the Nehru planetarium. It was a school holiday for them. We wanted to see the 12:45 p.m. show on the solar system. I have already covered the trip itself in another blog. To summarize - we made it in about 40 minutes no thanks to some hare-brained traffic light logic along JC Road.

A lot of talk - little to show for

Traffic
Over the past few months I have read a number of announcements by the traffic police on how they are going to improve things, I really have not seen much progress

BIAL connectivity updates Novenmber 2007

Traffic

Newspapers have been reporting a lot of action on BIAL connectivity front. Some tidbits:

“The design of the trumpet interchange has been finalised in coordination with the NHAI to accommodate the expansion to eight lanes. The interchange work will not be delayed. Most of it will be ready for the airport opening date of March 30 and completed by July 2008,’’ said Albert Brunner, CEO, Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL).

The infrastructure task force (basically a body of concerned industrailists of the city) is supposed to have met today (Thursday), we should have more updates in newspapers tomorrow. But it seems:

In the long term, the task force is thinking of an express train service, a Peripheral Ring Road and an Express Highway Ring Road, sources said.

Last week, Livemint reported that:

Prez Rule-II

House Dissolved

President Pratibha Patil has dissolved the State Legislative Assembly.

Advisors
The three advisors to Governor Rameshwar Thakur are likely to assume charge on November 29.

The Key To All Progress Lies With Our Babus

Governments form and fall, ministers come and go, but the people who will remain forever are the babus and their one-track mentality. Remember Yes, Minister and Ji Mantriji? They are the ones who wield all the influence over the ministers, educate and guide or misguide the Mantris. Babus clearly hold the keys of the kingdom. If we are to bring about a sea change in their attitudes, outlook, and competency, may be we could think of interacting with our prestigious IIMs who can design a special course for our Babus.

Namma Mono - Where are you ?

BMRC said that it cannot handle Monorail along with Metro. After that there is no update by either BMRCL or state government about the staus such as appointment of a consultant, is it going to be operated on a BOOT or is Government going to build, is BMRCL going to handle this or not etc.. Lot of questions arising about Monorail of Bangalore.

Cities and self rule

Governance

Mayor of London, Mr Ken Livingstone, made headlines when he visited Mumbai and Delhi recently. Amongst the things he said, here is one that I thought stood out.

"London mayor Ken Livingstone said on Wednesday that ... when it comes to the development of a city like Mumbai, he said he was not sure if his counterpart here can do much to change people’s lives with limited executive powers."

Thats a quote from TOI Mumbai Nov 22 2007. Truth hurts, but Mr Livingstone was almost right when he said that:

"... unfortunately the mayor of Mumbai did not have any power regarding important matters affecting the city. Almost all the powers are with the state government."

Microlevel Traffic Management Needed

State Government is engaged in just planning comprehensive traffic management plan for Bangalore for years together - Everything is on books - Nothing becoming to force except in very few countable cases. Simply Government is investing on tools such as Blackberry for traffic without any real application of it.

Can we move to make Bangalore either autonomous or as Union Territories

I am grateful to Tarle for inspiring me to write this. Some ex-CMs in the past did express their desire to transform Bangalore into a Singapore. What made Singapore what it is today, a role model for all cities and countries?

Why does the State Govt. want to be a vegetables vendor?

There is a Saphal outlet located in a single storied building on a sprawling site in 8th Block Koramangala, selling vegetables, etc. I believe there are many such outlets all over the city. Questions: (1) Why is the Govt. so eager to run a business?
