Public Transport For Bangalore

1) Why is it that the excise duty is 16 per cent on buses and a mere 1-2 per cent for BMWs?
2) Why not stop registration of cars like Singapore did?
3) You talk of conserving fuel and at the same time promote large segment cars. There are no concessions for small cars. Reva gets an excise duty concession, not here, but in London!
4) Transport is not about travelling between two points but about making a statement on ‘having arrived’
5) The road transport authority constituted has only bureaucrats, instead of multiple stakeholders.
6) Broadways and more flyovers are not the answer, as Bangkok has found out! Despite widening its roads it has not been able to avoid traffic jams at bottlenecks.
7) Witness the spate of road widening in Bangalore that has seen hundreds of trees felled. To what purpose? Simply to allow a mind-boggling 2.5 million vehicles to speed for a distance and then cruise to crawling speed! We never seem to learn.

Retaining HAL airport

Its a last chance to put our weight behind this issue. In view of the urgency of the matter, the Governor should bring the two parties to the agreement — Civil aviation ministry and BIAL — across the table for resolving the issue or, failing which, seek Central intervention to find a way out. The civil aviation ministry itself doesn’t seem to attach much sanctity to its policy of not allowing two international airports within 150 km. Recently it cleared a proposal to establish an airport at Noida near Delhi and Kannur in Kerala. There are number industry leaders voicing concern, but they need a co-ordinated effort & even citizens need to pressurize the government to act on public opinion. Various schemes like giving equity in HAl airport to BIAL & domestic flights during peak hours are being debated privately. So how do we convince the reluctant BIAL to agree on public interest?

vote our man to Lead India

An analysis of the public voting (through SMS) pattern, after each of the rounds, shows that whereas the competitor (Mr Nanavati from Ahmedabad) has always had over 80% support from his home state, our very own Mr R K Misra has had consistently less than 50% support from his home state. As such, folks, if there's one factor that's working against our man, it's the apathy of his own people.

BIAL tidbits - possible ATC delay, user fee, first flight etc.

Delay in ATC equipment? - [Disclaimer first - I learnt this back on Jan 13, and is second hand info] Someone who visited BIAL mentioned that there may be a delay in installing air traffic control equipment. BIAL asked HAL for help (to use their ATC equipment I assume, don't understand this stuff well), but apparently they can't. So BIAL may be settling for help from nearby Yelahanka airport in case ATC equipment isn't ready in time.

First flight - Its all set though, and 12:05 am Indian Airlines flight to Singapore would be the first one out of BIAL on March 30!

Pay more to use BIAL? - Hope you guys have been following news reports about BIAL asking for a "user development fee". Rs 675 for domestic and 955  international for each departing passenger, source here.

Trees and Transportation

Trees in trouble (http://www.deccanherald.com/Content/Jan292008/snt2008012849110.asp)
Plans are afoot to fell thousands of trees to make way for roads. Kathyayini Chamaraj wonders why trees have to always bear the brunt of development.

Big Idea for Transportation in Bangalore - Plan for Non Motorized Transportation in Bangalore

When people refer to Bangalore, they immediately visualise the chaotic traffic scenario. A lot of concern has been expressed over the years on the congestion issue with government launching several schemes to improve its traffic (Building several Roads, Flyovers etc) but alas no solution!!
