The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) will introduce trunk feeder service on 21 routes with new buses and electronic ticketing machines by July 1 this year on an experimental basis for three months.

A decision in this regard was taken by a committee headed by the State Transport Secretary in December. The committee was formed following a High Court order which suggested the formation of a panel to consider the feeder service. The High Court had passed the order after hearing a petition by senior citizen N Parameswaran who had filed an interlocutory application proposing a two-tier system called the feeder route - trunk route system to be adopted by the BMTC. Parameswaran felt this could reduce congestion in the City. The performance of the service will be reviewed during the experiment and it will be withdrawn if it affects revenue and inconveniences commuters

BMTC new routes

This looks like it has finally been thrust upon BMTC. And for that reason alone BMTC would be happy to let it fail.

These new routes need publicity, when they get introduced. Will the BMTC do it? The current record doesn't inspire confidence.

Whats the intent of the above service?

Does it have small sized buses to act as feeders to trunk routes?

Why doesnt it push the govt to root out the private bus mafia?

Spotted a bus at Marenhalli

Spotted a bus at Marenhalli signal today-didnt have a proper route board but FDR-6 was printed boldly on white paper and affixed to the front and back glasses(Chikkalasandra-Uttarahalli-Jambusavaridinne-J.P.Nagar 15th cross,-Marenhalli-Jayanagar 4th block- Banashankari-Chikkalasandra). Looks like existing FDR's will also get a boost again and hope they run in good frequencies like FDR-1 and FDR-2. Earlier there was only one bus from depot-33 on fDR-6-looks like this is a second bus coming up.

an update

Starting June, commuters in the city, especially those using the peripheral ring road, will have increased connectivity. The BMTC will introduce 21 new feeder routes to address the issue of last mile connectivity.

For the full report in the New Indian Express, click here.

This is quite the right way to go. But, when this is the norm with the BMTC services, I doubt things are going to improve any. This is apart from the point made by Ashok, above.

Opening up of the sector to well-regulated competition from the private sector is the only way out.

Why doesnt it push the govt to root out the private bus mafia?

There's no bigger mafia than the one controlled by the transport minister himself. As for the private sector, please understand that they can be good or bad as the conditions they are made to operate under - check this.
