Rail terminus at BIAL needed

Hi Guys,

I feel that BIAL must have a dedicated long distance rail terminus to which ONLY Shatabdi / AC express / Garib Rath kind of trains from all cities in South India that are away from Bangalore by about 10 hours by train, would reach the airport directly. This is specifically directed at making Bangalore, a hub for international air traffic in South India, as it is India's third busiest airport after Mumbai and Delhi and busiest in South India. These trains besides transporting passengers directly to the airport, give a unique feel to Bangalore. If K.S.R.T.C too establishes a bus terminus with only Airavat's plying to it, Devanahalli would be a complete transport hub with flights from all over the world, long distance trains from all over South India and luxury coaches from all over Karnataka or South India and metro linking all major points in Bangalore.

I am not sure, which of the cities in the world have this sort of an infrastructure at the airport, but if implemented, in India, Bangalore would be the first to boast of such a facility ; or so I believe.

Some of the trains, which I hope to be operated are:

  • Mangalore - Devanahalli Shatabdi express
  • Karwar - Devanahalli Shatabdi express
  • Mysore - Devanahalli Shatabdi express
  • Bidar - Gulbarga - Devanahalli Shatabdi express
  • Belgaum - Hubli - Devanahalli Shatabdi express
  • Chennai - Devanahalli Shatabdi express
  • Ernakulam - Devanahalli Shatabdi Express

All airports are connected

All airports are connected by air. As such connecting whole of [south] India to BIAL by rail is superfluous.  Is it not enough to connect BIAL to Bangalore city by metro?

Paris CDG airport and Frankfurt airport both have this facility; which is, high speed trains connecting them to other cities.  But, Bangalore could take the approach of London's Heathrow airport linking it to the city via a dedicated high speed rail. A dedicated link would be expensive so extending the Bangalore Metro to the airport should also suffice.

Connecting Bangalore City to

Connecting Bangalore City to the airport by means of metro is certainly needed. My suggestion was to explore the possibility of having a dedicated rail terminus near the airport as the Bangalore - Chikballapur railway line runs right below the trumpet interchange and the government has  spoken (occassionally though) of extending the same to the terminal building.

As I was not really sure of whether the government is keen on extending a project such as commuter rail to the airport, I felt operating long distance trains to a dedicated rail terminus at the airport would benefit more people in smaller towns in the Southern part of the country.  Such a move in future might allow the Indian railways and the airlines to enter into an agreement such as allowing the passengers to check-in at the railway stations of these towns which would save their time, once they arrive at Bangalore.

If few intercity trains could depart from or halt at a terminal right near BIAL, that would be a good boost for nearby Tier-2 cities. However, we don't know if air traffic from outside Bangalore satellite/BMRDA area is big enough right now to justify such investment. But any future/modern railway plans (the on and off talk of high speed corridors) must touch BIAL.

Even from present day's perspective, shifting railway terminals from inside city to outside (call these "edge terminals") the city could help. That would free up capacity on the tracks inside the city so that we can use them for commuter rail service. And we could take the commuter rail to go to an "edge terminal".

2 or 3 edge terminals around the city, and 1 of these terminals located very close to BIAL - that would be nice. No long distance train would terminate inside the city. Get off on the edge, and take a commuter to the station nearest to your house. And the edge terminal at BIAL doubles up as easy train connect for air passengers heading to nearby towns.
