Literary, Arts and Heritage Forum, NIAS, is pleased to announce a Lecture on "Green Bangalore: Some Reflections” by Prof Vijay Tiruvady (vrt@bgl.vsnl.net.in)

Highlights of the talk:
The Greening began with the development of Devarakadus & Gundutopus around Bangalore;
The next greening took place around settlements adjacent to lakes, a network of which was established by Kempe Gowda to harvest Monsoon rain water;
The first area within Bangalore to be greened was the 40 acre Rose & Cypress Garden of Haider Ali.
With the growth of the British Empire plant collecting expeditions resulted in exotic species coming into Lalbagh.
With these developments Bangalore has had a mix of indigenous and exotic plants like no other city in India.
Through the 19th Century all the early institutions in Bangalore were planted with this mix of indigenous and exotics.
Till 1800 Bangalore was a barren plateau, yet after 100 years it started to be called the Green City of India.
The Greening of Bangalore was for cultural, botanical and commercial reasons.
About the Speaker:
Vijay Thiruvady spent his early years in Delhi. He studied in St. Columba’s School and St. Stephen’s College in Delhi and School of Architecture in Ahmedabad. When in Delhi he had exposure to the world of nature and environment through association with a number of distinguished people and institutions. Professionally, Thiruvady has been in the Oil & Gas and Petrochemical Industry for the last 35 years, having worked for and represented in India - Tata Consulting Engineers, John Brown Engineers & Constructors Ltd, UK, AMEC UK and John Zink Company internationally. Thiruvady was also involved in the setting up of John Brown Engineering India of which he was a Promoter/Director. Thiruvady has always been interested in various aspects of nature and more specifically horticulture. He has a farm in the outskirts of Bangalore, conducts Green Heritage Walks in Lalbagh and participates in the various activities of Bangalore Environment Trust as a Trustee. These include the writing of a book on Heritage Tree and a study of Devarakadus/ Gundutopus and large wooded institutional areas in Bangalore. Thiruvady also conducts Walks for guests at West End Hotel, apart from having participated in the Asian Hotel Series with Vir Sanghvi in Discovery/Travel Channel which covered West End Hotel Bangalore
